like I didn't see the banana potato video until it popped up on here and then I cried for days

HI HELLO I've never posted here before and there are only so many people but it still feels like I'm talking to a really big room. I have a somewhat simple question to ask, if simple means youtube will become your best friend ( Read more... )

media: interviews, media: variety tv

I've always thought if I ever had to make a super basic, if-you-give-me-three-hours-of-your-life-I-will-make-you-a-SNSD-fan primer, it would be Taeyeon's (roller coaster!) episode of MTV, Intimate Note (I mean, obviously), and the game day thing from the AAGG DVD, which is unfortunately not fully up on youtube (BUT IT IS MY FAVORITE!! Because I like stupid games and because it is all of them -- I miss Tiffany in Intimate Note and I miss Yoona in Factory girl and idk I just really like it when stuff has all 9 of them). Also maybe the episode of Running Man from last fall????

YOUR LIST SOUNDS GOOD AS IS THOUGH!! I think GGTS is their most watchable show but I also think it kind of depends on your audience? Like, is your primer angled towards people who are not really fans (who should watch sillier stuff to convince them first) or people who are interested but not hooked (FOR WHOM GGTS IS PERFECT). Also yes, Factory Girl!! And there are some really great clips from the last couple of episodes of Horror Movie Factory (Sooyoung getting stuck in sumo wrestling hell k i l l s me and also the ugly faceoffs) but I wouldn't put those in their entirety.

Anyway here is some stuff from my youtube favorites which may or may not help, the stuff I tend to favorite is the stuff I think I won't be able to find that easily so there are some gems but most of it is weird junk:
Yuri's terrible French
a 3-second clip of Jessica punching a manager
Sooyoung, Yuri, Hyoyeon, and Tiffany being losers
Seohyun dancing to Vitamin on the radio, Yuri being weird about not having any makeup on
a new interpretation of the Gee dance
Tiffany giggling about Sooyoung's pterodactyl fangirl
THE MY BEST FRIEND FANCAM!!! (also the Boys rehearsal fancam!!! I'm trying to keep perf stuff off because that doesn't seem that primery but sometimes it's hard to resist)
this is a predebut INTW fancam, I'm pretty sure I saved it bc some of the youtube comments are actually from before they debuted
oh and I still really love this interview.

OKAY I THINK THAT'S ALL I HAVE TO SAY you're going to link us when this is done though right?!?!

So I haven't ever seen Taeyeon's MTV episode (I am honestly unsure if I've ever sat through an episode of one :s) and I will be sitting down to watch that as soon as I have time this weekend. I haven't seen the games from AAGG either! Good god. and I literally had just put Running Man on my to-watch list the other day because there was a gifset of them all waking up and I couldn't tell from hair alone who was who. I really like Taenysic + Yoona's ep of Happy Together, but it's kind of random and it's mostly for Yoona's hilarity and everyone falling over laughing.

I loveeee GGTS, it will forever be my favourite show of theirs. Besides Intimate Note, maybe. Mm, actually most (if not all?) of the people this primer is for aren't actually into kpop, which makes me self-conscious of my constant use of aegyo/kkab/repackage vocabulary. I realised the other day that most if not all (I really think it's all, but I'm not sure) of my online friends who like kpop love SNSD, which seems ridiculous to me because I mean yes I was a flaming Sone when I became friends with a lot of them, but I haven't ever convinced anyone to get into SNSD except for my mom (who was a lazy anti and then I converted her and I won). The only parts of Horror Movie Factory I saw was Jessica screaming/kicking everyone, lmao, I will go find those clips.

Everyone's responses to this post have been everything I wanted and more, omg. I love random hysterical clips of them being ridiculous more than most things?? and I haven't seen most of these, which is the best. LMAO THEM how do they exist. and that Danjjak fancam is one of my favourite fancams EVER, and I have sat through so many omg. I realised as I was watching like a 10-minute clip of Jessica speaking English (my specialty: sitting through SNSD English videos) that I hadn't super kept up on their American promotions, and I haven't seen that interview! So I will watch it.

Thank you, seriously~ omg, I've come to terms with the fact that it's a multi-part primer. There's the first one, and then a random screencap of Jessica saying, "Girls' Generation to me is ... a soul mate" with the photobook interviews linked underneath, and I'm uploading a ton of music which, ha, I am not totally sure everyone is okay with BUT I am linking a ton of mv's in there, but almost no perfs. And then a post with a bunch more videos with this stuff + other things if I find them (I totally forgot about my own favourites on yt!) and perhaps I'll be done. I am just suddenly determined to get a bunch of people into them, even if they're not into kpop at all. \o/

A couple of months (or maybe a year?) I decided I was going to watch ALL THEIR STUFF IN ORDER, so that's why I have seen all the MTV episodes (I've stopped and stalled since then, SOMETIMES I WONDER IF I WILL EVER GET THROUGH HELLO BABY god) -- honestly most of them are pretty boring but... there are moments! Taeyeon's and Sooyoung's are the best ones, but Tiffany's was sweet (there's a bit at the end where she talks to her dad), and Jessica's was boring but almost worth it because she was so determined to show the world ~she really can cook~ (in stark contrast to the other cooking moment you mentioned above from Factory Girl" where Yuri's like "god just give me the bowl YOU'RE USELESS", here Yuri is like "YES I BELIEVE IN YOU OF COURSE YOU CAN COOK!!!"). And Seobot drags Taeyeon and Tiffany to a Keroro recording, l o l. BUT SERIOUSLY, mostly pretty boring. And o m g you have to see the AAGG games, I rewatched it recently and they are just all so silly and wonderful, the Jessica/Seohyun/Sooyoung team is like, one of the funniest thins I have ever seen. AND I LIKED THAT HAPPY TOGETHER EPISODE but not as much as the Hoot era one with... hm, Seohyun, Sooyoung, Taeyeon, Yuri, and Sunny (I think)?

wow I've spent a lot of my life watching videos of these 9 idiots, huh

Mm, actually most (if not all?) of the people this primer is for aren't actually into kpop, which makes me self-conscious of my constant use of aegyo/kkab/repackage vocabulary.
Yeah I had that issue when I was trying to write my SNSD primer thing! There's so much weird vocabulary like that that you use thoughtlessly that is super weird if you're not... already into kpop.

LMAO THEM how do they exist.
lol I love this sentence. BUT YAY I'M GLAD YOU'RE ENDEAVORING TO RECRUIT PEOPLE, I feel like there are so many people ~out there~ who would super enjoy them but are resistant because... lol kpop. THE THINGS THEY ARE MISSING OUT ON, geez.

I KNOW RIGHT, I think once I tried too, and then I got like halfway through GGTS before I stopped. I'm really awful at watching shows/variety because I get easily distracted but I try! I can't sit through Hello Baby, lmao, I'd rather watch clips. Noted, I'll watch Taeyeon's and Sooyoung's. Aw Tiffany~ and lol I love Jessica but I would watch just for the cooking. ah it's from Factory Girl, I couldn't remember what that Yulsic clip was from! lmfao Seobot she would. YES that Happy Together episode is the greatest! I haven't seen it all (once again, I suck at watching full things) but they are hilarious. Give me people sitting in a spa just talking all the time.

augh I know. When I've sat through a slew of 10-minute videos about them being funny I realise it's been an hour and I've done nothing. :D

Your primer is the greatest! It's so good for getting to know the members, because others tend to spew facts whereas you sit down and talk about each of them at length while being realistic about their strengths/weaknesses/charm points/whatever. I try to tone it down but I figure if they don't know, they can just ask~

We can just call my love for them trying to figure how they exist. They are at like, 90 percent improbability but they exist and it's wonderful. I know! She said with a thousand exclamation marks but tried not to look like her keyboard was broken. But seriously, kpop is the best, my life is better for it, etc.

GGTS and Factory Girl were pretty easy for me to get through but everything else was kind of a chore. ESPECIALLY HELLO BABY, I don't understand how something can be so hysterical in clips but so boring as a unit??? (It probably doesn't help that I've seen most of the "funny parts" already.)

LOL THAT IS AN ACCURATE DESCRIPTION OF FAR TOO MANY DAYS OF MY LIFE

Thank you so much!! Every six months I am like 'I need to update/revise that!!!!' but I am always too lazy, but one of the parts I've always wanted to redo is the bottom with like, a better guide to what to watch so... BASICALLY I AM RLY HAPPY THAT YOU ARE DOING THIS, bc when you are done I am just going to be like "OKAY NOW GO HERE!!!"

The other day a couple of friends were complaining about how british girl groups get no love/fic compared to One Direction and I wanted to interject all KPOP, GUYS, but I also didn't want to be that girl. I mean obviously watching dumb pop groups be silly on variety tv is not for everyone, but it is so made for me, and so made for so many people who do not realize.

oh god I just came this close to making a joke about you spreading the 'gospel' I think this comment needs to end now

I think Factory Girl will be a lot easier for me as well, since I watched a fair bit of it the other day. The concept of Hello Baby/Horror Movie Factory just doesn't appeal to me as much? Especially since I just want to laugh at the girls being incompetent mothers and quietly adore Hyoyeon for being great. Also, I had bookmarked Star Life Theater AGES ago and will probably watch, but wrt Running Man, Happy Together, AAGG etc. which order do you suggest watching them?

JUST AS ADVERTISED. I don't pretend to be anything but a Sone, okay.

pffft no, just leave it! and this is going to be another messy post on tumblr so like "quality," idk, under this primers tag I just started (if you have feelings about supporting them/purchasing the music JUST IGNORE THE TOP POST meep) but I will quite obviously be directing people here because greatest community? Yes.

lmfao well, One Direction is its own thing, and I have gone down the rabbit hole of how they conduct themselves and the love/support they get, and it just wouldn't happen for a girl group. I don't know how to handle non-kpop groups (like there were/are the Spice Girls and Girls Aloud etc.) but I like One Direction and I KNOW that a girl group acting the same would not get hardly the same amount of attention. Gotta love those isms. Part of the reason they succeed is that they're a boyband, which is perceived so different from a girl group - even the language I'm using is indicative.

BUT REALLY they should all get into kpop :D It is so made for me, omg, the kpop industry is like what my soul wanted out of the world and then it happened. (I almost wrote "entire" and then I remembered that most of fandom is there and terrible, but it's nice that pockets of lovely people are here.)

oh lol Soshified called GGTS the Soshi Bible and I WOULD call it that in conversation so GO AHEAD I can't ever shame for jokes because I make the worst puns, most of the way I humour is complete cheesiness.

Yeah ia, I like shows that are just about them fooling around much more than I like shows where they are ~taking care of a baby~ or ~helping boys get on the straight and narrow~. I mean, they fool around in everything because they are them, but it's a silliness:other shit ratio. (GGTS is sort of different, though?? ~A league of its' own.) And okay DEFINITELY AAGG first (it's kind of hard to find though? let me know if you can't dig it up because I think I have an .avi saved, I HOARD MY FAVORITES, never forget the time when Intimate Note wasn't on youtube), then Running Man, and then Happy Together. Happy Together is fun but it's not that necessary idk?? Like I seriously have only seen it because it randomly popped up in related videos when I was on a youtube spiral a couple of months ago.

AHH NO THOSE LOOK GREAT!! (and l o l, I am the absolute most terrible music pirate and I don't feel THAT guilty about Soshi but I also listen to a lot of like, indie stuff??? AND SOMETIMES WHEN I STOP TO THINK ABOUT THAT I FEEL BAD. but not bad enough to stop.)

Oh I mean it is, and of course boy groups anywhere will ALWAYS get way more attention than girl groups (and that is doubly true in kpop, a k a the worst fandom, which is probably why people like you are constantly trying to get more of the "good people" from other fandoms to fall into the hole and talk about it with us), but I just feel like if you are the type of person who likes to listen to shitty silly pop music and intensely follow groups then... you are prob the type of person for kpop. (Seriously like -- when I was 11 I was obsessed with all these completely irrelevant american/british girl groups and when I was 17 I watched WAY TOO MANY EPISODES of this stupid MTV show about Danity Kane so like... of course I got into kpop when I was 20. OF COURSE I DID!!!) I don't follow 1D but I find my friends' obsession spirals SO QT because they remind me so much of my kpop sprial. BUT SINCE I DON'T FOLLOW THEM IT IS V POSSIBLE I AM PROJECTING, and being into 1D is a completely different kind of thing.

okay wow somehow that paragraph was supposed to come to a head about the fact that I think that people are slightly more resistant to kpop because of the a certain stigma against "asian fandoms"/anime (which shouldn't even be considered related, rly, but it is!), but I CAN'T MAKE THE TRANSITION. what is organized writing, why did they let me graduate college

anyway basically just yes to this sentence: the kpop industry is like what my soul wanted out of the world and then it happened

THE WORST PUNS MAKE THE BEST JOKES THOUGH, that is just a basic fact.

yyyy I would watch SNSD Fools Around all day long. I didn't watch much of Dangerous Boys but I thought it was kind of awkward because the boys were clearly in love with them? I know that was kind of the point, like get motivated to put your life together by these girls whom everyone adores, except what are you supposed to do when you're suddenly in contact with the ideal girls everyone loves? I will let you know! I am semi on vacation right now but when I can sit down sometime this week to watch, if I can't find it, I will buzz you. lol youtube spirals, I'm familiar with those. It's just random talking!

/blush Thank you! Most of the time I operate on the assumption that people don't care, but sometimes they do and I don't want to offend them, but my entire music library is pirated, so. :x Never bad enough to stop, exactly.

I wasn't in kpop fandom in 2008, but as far as I can tell, until WG and SNSD hit it big, girl groups weren't believed to make as much money/have as many fans, right? Plus while SNSD has their fanboys, I feel like they're looked down upon more than fangirls, because somehow it's more appropriate to be a fan and lose your head/wholeheartedly appreciate something if you're female. Bullshit. HAHA OMG, I hadn't really thought about it, but my friends talk about TV/1D/etc. in the best ways, since we're all focused on isms and how they impact what we consume, and my friends who talk about kpop that way are my favourite. :D and lord YES, I was so obsessed with the Spice Girls when I was in elementary school, and my parents listen to a lot of Corean music (since they're Corean, lol) so I'd gotten bits and pieces of Boa/HOT/SES/etc. over the years. and then I discovered kpop on the internet and it was all over. Once I'd become friends with more people who liked 1D, I almost immediately had questions ("are they all really that obsessed with each other??") and then my life was over AGAIN. It's oddly pretty similar? There are the things the boys in 1D do that kpop groups couldn't, and it works the other way too. And 1D doesn't really have the group competition that kpop groups do. They pretty much are holding their title by themselves.

LOL YES MY FAVOURITE THING. I really like manga and hate it when people look down on it, and even if I haven't kept up with it in about two years now? I can feel myself getting defensive when people look down on even graphic art. And even Avatar: the Last Airbender used to get flak for being a cartoon, but then a bunch of my friends watched it and love it so that doesn't happen anymore. See people just have to get into things and there isn't a problem. ahaha, if I could've written about kpop for school, my essays would've gotten done a lot faster. I MEAN LOOK AT THESE PARAGRAPHS I'm not even trying to talk that much and yet.

Truer words have never been spoken, folks. ALSO I don't know if this is awkward or not, I feel like it probably is, but we've talked before and are not friends?? Which is so weird to me because you are obviously great, why haven't I asked before, but anyway, do you want to be friends? No pressure, we will always have this community talk anyway. :)

Ahhh I hated that part of it too! I hate that in general, so much of their variety time in the past year-ish has been dedicated to men eyehearting over them and it... is just so awkward to me. I mean, I still vaaaaaguely intend to watch it someday because it looks like a lot of funny things happened anyway?? But :/

I wasn't either but I get that impression too! And you're right about fanboys, like they're considered bad to the point where I've heard some people say "oh well SNSD's fandom is mostly boys" like that was a point against them? Which is weird when you think about it. (That said-- I still think male Taeyeon fans are the worst part of SNSD fandom.)

I've honestly never been that into anime or manga (unless you count growing up on Miyazaki films, which I only kind of do for me -- I mean, they're obv anime, it's just that I never felt fannish about them, I just love them??) but I mean... they're just another fandom?? It's sort of uncomfortable how people who like them have always kind of been divided into a weird them, separate from the rest of us in fandom. I d k I do think that divide is sloooooowly being broken down a little, but it's still awkward, and I still occasionally feel like my old friends from other fandoms are judge me for being super into my korean pop stars in a way that they don't necessarily judge the 1D people. BUT I AM ALSO MAYBE PROJECTING, I don't know.

ANYWAY yes of course I want to be friends you are great!! We probably should have done this a long time ago!!! BUT FRIENDING IS AWKWARD. I am also going to add you on last.fm? Because last.fm friends are my favorite, idk.

Agreeeeed, I can't agree with that any more. Like I adore Yoona and I'm glad the girls do too, and I thought it was hilarious in Happy Together when ~goddess Yoona popped in and they were like, laying their towels on the ground for her to walk on, but it's the kind of attention that is tiring. It's good popularity-wise! But if you're not as endlessly gracious as Yoona is, ergh. Yeah, that's what I say about all SNSD things. "I know I'll see it someday, so..."

That's not a bad thing! I like same-gender fans because I am one, obviously (when I first got into kpop I liked Big Bang/Wonder Girls/Super Junior but I was into WG the least of the three fan-wise and then suddenly my favourite group was very obviously SNSD and all of my female kpop fan friends liked boy groups and it made me feel pretty different) but also I don't think that stigma should exist. Oh dear, dish on male Taeyeon fans? I am totally unaware of this. One of my guy friends loves SNSD, and Taeyeon is both our favourites but we never really talk about it because our conversations start getting weird.

Miyazaki! I didn't really grow up on them; I saw Spirited Away and HAHA just Spirited Away, but I got really obsessed with them in college and have tried (and have done really slowly) to watch all the Ghibli movies. Mostly I just watch Howl's Moving Castle allll the time. I hate that fandoms judge each other, and of course especially because I a part of them. It's nice that I see friends of friends getting into kpop because then I think, I'm not the only person on their dash melting into kpop feels \o/ SO DUMB. I would understand if they were like ugh your fandom is the worst which is still pretty reductive but obviously you are very much not being gross and terrible about kpop, but so is the majority of One Direction's fandom?? Why are people.

Oh yay! Wheeeee and YES I love my last.fm, I go and look through it at least once a week because I like to see what music my brain has been on and what people are listening to. :D
