rollerblades = luv

I finally have some rollerblades! I'm soo happy and excited about them. I'm pretty bad at skating still but I'm not as terrible as I thought I'd be. My new K2's are much better than the old pair I used to have, so I'm still getting used to trusting them to go over bumps smoothly etc. Anyway, it's much faster to get to campus now ( Read more... )

Duuuude. The proposed system isn't perfect, but anything is better than first past the post. Our system right now is just so...painfully...stupid.

Also, people seem to have this idea the Citizens' Assembly is a front for the evil proportional representation industry or something. Really, they're just a bunch of n00bs who were given a lot of time and resources to study all the possible voting systems and figure out which one works best. They have no agenda. There's no reason that they'd choose to recommend some proportional system over the status quo unless they genuinely thought it was better. So don't call their site propaganda, 'cause it ain't. :)

(Also, the fact that the government supported this is actually pretty amazing, because governments generally love the status quo. It lets them grab all the power and go on political rampages even when most of the population hates them. Proportionality wouldn't let them do that.)

Anyway: Vote for electoral reform!

  • I can think of some systems that are not better. lolz
  • Hmmm... define "better", anyway.
  • A painfully stupid system isn't necessarily a bad one ;-)

So don't call their site propaganda, 'cause it ain't.

Their site seems to me to be strongly in support of their proposed system. Which makes sense, since it's their proposal. It's not like I think they're "scheming", but they certainly have a stake in this now. I want to hear oppositional arguments before I make a solid opinion... and they're not offering any.

(yes, I'm quoting you out of order now.)

Really, they're just a bunch of n00bs

Yes.

who were given a lot of time and resources

That's a matter of opinion ;-)

If I decide I don't like the proposal, it will likely have to do with the way it enshrines "party" status; the party gets to pick people it likes, rather than the individuals themselves being individually voted in. For the list people, anyway. *shrug* but I haven't really formed an opinion yet.

Maybe I'm being hypersensitive since I don't know who you are, but I get the impression that you think I'm going to vote on this before I understand it. I wouldn't vote against it -- or for it -- until I've looked into the issue quite carefully. I think the proposal has some very nice properties. What I would like now, though, is to hear some of the arguments against the proposal, so I can consider them as well. They seem harder to come by, as there is no formal representation for the status quo.

Got your reply. Glad to hear you will look at it. Your initial message was cause for some concern there ( ... )

I finally have some rollerblades!

I bought a cheap pair myself, and my new girlfriend is after me to try them out. Anyone know a good osteopath? :-)

I want to code webapps.

I've decided I want to become a python web app programmer, mostly because the Java thing was turning out to be really boring. Know any good books or start stuff on python web coding?

how come versioning wasn't taken up by the mainstream filesystems many years ago?

Because many years ago disk space was expensive and slow, and efficient binary diff algorithms had not yet been discovered. You may as well ask why PC XTs weren't 64-bit. Sun ZFS has in fact been around for some time, though, in the proprietary closed-source world.

Ontario electoral reform referendum magic thingy

Oh, god damn. This whole stupid argument with the guy from New Zealand is like watching butlers rearrange deck chairs on the Titanic. The entire Westminster parliamentary system is flawed, people. It was designed to abrogate just enough power to the peers of the realm - not the ( ... )

Nope. Wish I did, though.

This whole stupid argument with the guy from New Zealand (...)

Note that noone argued with him about the parliamentary system -- he just ranted about it, and we argued about why (and whether) he was ranting about it. :D

Just because a system was designed for one purpose doesn't mean it's bad for another. That it is bad is another matter.... though as broken as things are, I think there are serious repercussions to either scenario that comes from the October vote.. so I think it is worth considering the kind of rope I'd like us to be hanged with :)
