It was a fun weekend. Jana, Wendy, Sam the Pug and I drove to Jana's hometown of Coos Bay, Oregon. The small city is located almost in the middle of the state on the Oregon coast. Jana was in need of visiting her ailing Grandmother. Wendy wanted to try out the expanding casino, The Mill, and I simply was up for a new place of adventure.
The ride there was rocky. A huge thunderstorm with strong rain and powerful gusts of wind made the I-5 corridor through the Willamette Valley a mess. There were no accidents like over New Years, but the weather left everybody drive more defensively.
When we checked into our room at The Red Lion it was already dark. We settled in and almost immediately headed for the casino. The Mill casino wasn't as awful as some casino's I have been in. All the machines volumes were turned down and for a Friday night the place wasn't jammed packed with people.
I started off playing a strange Japanese inspired slot machine. Of course, I lost all my credits. I have never had any luck on machines. And for the most part I don't consider them to be much fun.
Later I meet up with Wendy who was playing Three Cards. I gave it a go, leaving the table sixty-five dollars ahead. Three Cards seems to be the most fair card game I have ever seen at a casino. It really is slanted evenly between the dealer and the player.
After that I was through gambling for the evening, so I made my way to the small quiet bar. There older men were drinking stiff drinks and chatting. Their tone of voice was calm and regular. I knew I had found a good space to finish the evening.
Soon after Jana and her cousin, Katie, joined me. We were pretty toasted so we made our way to the hotel. While Wendy stayed behind playing Spanish 21 and Three Card.
At the hotel I was starving, so Katie and I went to the adjacent city of North Bend to the Kozy Kitchen for a late breakfast. I had a great country fried steak that was literally the size of my head. I ate the whole steak except a little white gravy left on the plate. Bloatingly full back at the hotel I crawled into bed and slept well.
Saturday during the day Jana went and visited with her Grandmother while Wendy slept off her long evening and I relaxed watching movies. At about six, Wendy and I went to The Mill and had a pretty decent chicken pesto pizza.
Then we went back to the Three Card table. The cards didn't fall in my favor this time though and I had lost all my winnings from the day before. Thankfully Jana and Katie showed up at this time distracting me away from the table.
Bored with the casino Katie and I were done and decided to go out and visit some of the local bars. I tried dragging Jana away from the slots, but she had won a bunch of money on some Egyptian inspired game making her want to stay on the machines.
Katie and my first stop was at a small bar were Katie knew the owner. The place was called Coos Station. It had a railroad theme (hint Coos Station). We watched the exciting end to the Steelers Jaguars game while drinking pints. Oddly enough one of the beers on tap was Abita's Purple Haze, a small brewery located only about ten miles from my folk’s home in Louisiana.
Next we went to her favorite bar called Goonies. There I played shuffleboard for the first time. It was hell-a fun. My first couple of pucks skidded either too far down the table or into the side gutters. But after a while I started to get the hand of it.
We meet a weird group all dressed in semi-goth gear who where all drinking blue drinks. The drinks looked interesting so Katie and I had a one each. They tasted like Kool-Aid and tequila. Which would have been fine, if I were sneaking booze from my parents or had just turned eighteen, but they weren't adult mixed drinks.
We started a doubles game of shuffleboard. The match was pretty even at first then I really started to get the puck a rolling. In the end, the cool kids forfeited due to their own bad drama. Before we left they asked us to go to their place for more drinks and partying. I thought about it and wanted to go, but changed my mind seeing their drama wasn't quite over and didn't want to get evolved in their dilemma.
Then Katie took me to the old bank which they had turned into a night club. The place was pretty sad as far as night clubs go, but it was fun to see a smaller cities version of a dance place. Jana showed up at the club a couple of drinks later, so we made our way to the bar. There was the cutest blonde bartender there. She was lots of fun to watch like a ditsy Barbie Doll. We all left pretty wasted.
In the morning we all took it slow and enjoyed the ride drove home. This time we got to see more of the mountains and farmlands of the lower Willamette Valley. Although my time in Coos Bay was fun. It was good to sleep in my own bed last night.
