Hang on, why didn't anybody at Readercon mention that Fred Saberhagen passed away only a week before the con?? Maybe they did at the bigger panels and I missed it, but they might have mentioned it at the Meet The Pros(e) gathering or put together a quick memorial panel. The last story in his original Berserker compilation (look around at the ( Read more... )

Oh, wow, I totally didn't know about Saberhagen. Bummer. :(

Actually, some rather vital information WAS written/edited out of PotC:AWE; things having to do with Davy Jones' duty and such. I don't know if you heard about that little problem..?

I don't think immortality would hold any real appeal for Norrington, personally. In fact, I think the very notion might frighten him more than a little bit. rexluscus wrote a fantastic meta analyzing Norrington and his death recently, and since it pretty much echoes everything I thought when I saw the film, I'll just point you to it. ;)

And I haven't spotted a Norrington-meets-Governor-Swann-in-the-little-boats fic yet, but Rex wrote a rather fun little Barbossa-comes-to-get-Norrington's-sorry-butt fic called Water and Heaven. I suppose you'll just have to write the other... ::whistles innocently::

*nods* >( We're losing the grandmasters one by one. It's sad.

Really? No... do tell!

Hmm, interesting point. I was wondering whether his dedication to duty (tarnished as it had been of late) would have tipped that balance at all -- will read those links later today when I have time. Thanks for pointing me there!

Really? No... do tell!

When Davy Jones first took up the duty of captaining the Flying Dutchman, he was only supposed to serve for ten years. At the end of that time, he would return to land, where Calypso would meet him, and he would be freed of his duties at that time. However, Calypso failed to meet him, and that is why he was doomed to serve on the Dutchman until someone replaced him ( ... )

Huh!!! It made sense for Barbossa, who loved an immortal sea witch, but for Will, whose wife is going to age faster and faster with each decade.... oops is right. XD Interesting how the alternate scenario puts the blame on Calypso for ruining Davy's life, rather than Davy for neglecting his duty and destroying his crew purely out of pique.

I wonder how the captaincy was supposed to be passed on in the original story. Presumably Will would have to get his heart back, to let it be replaced by the next captain's heart. That must be something to see.

*reads those two links* Hahaha, Dark Norrington and Barbossa... a deadly combination indeed. XD And that's a great bit of meta too. I hadn't thought of him in terms of that flaw.

I just read his obit in the Washington Post. :( I've never read his Berserker series but his Dracula series was fabulous.

;_; I think I read one of those years ago -- it was the Holmes-Dracula crossover. Really well done.
