Hang on, why didn't anybody at Readercon mention that Fred Saberhagen passed away only a week before the con?? Maybe they did at the bigger panels and I missed it, but they might have mentioned it at the Meet The Pros(e) gathering or put together a quick memorial panel. The last story in his original Berserker compilation (look around at the scenery for a while) still gives me chills. At least we still have Bradbury.

Also, having thought about PotC III a bit more, I'm wondering whether the Jack-wants-immortality subplot was originally written for Norrington. It seems to ring more true to him. Jack's all about freedom, right? Would sailing the seas for all eternity still have felt like freedom if it became a full-time obligation? But I can easily see Norrington realizing that Davy Jones must be destroyed and mentally accepting the consequences out of duty, and I can also see him stoop suddenly to guide Will's knife to the heart as Jack tries to hold off Davy Jones. Can't remember from only seeing it once -- what distracted Davy when Jack got to the heart? Was it Bill Turner?

And somebody must have written a Norrington-meets-Governor-Swann-in-the-little-boats scene already. Will DEFINITELY NOT search for it before my next essay is done. WILL NOT.
