fatal mistake
kyuhyun/sungmin | romance | pg
sungmin just wanted to make kyuhyun happy. how did it come to this…

Leeteuk blanched. “You got him Black Ops for Christmas?”

“Yeah.” Sungmin grinned, holding up the game. “I think he’ll really like it. He told me a few days ago that he hadn’t had the chance to buy it yet. It was on sale, too!”

His friend looked at him seriously. “You do realize what you’re doing to yourself, right?”

“Hm? What do you mean?”

Leeteuk plucked the game out of Sungmin’s hand, clicking his tongue. “Tomorrow’s Christmas, so Kyuhyun will be receiving this tomorrow. Your birthday is next week. This has only been the hottest game since StarCraft II.”

Sungmin nodded slowly. “And…?”

Leeteuk sighed, sitting down on the couch. “Kyuhyun’s totally going to ignore you for the next month. He’s not even going to remember your birthday!”

He nearly choked on his own spit. “Are you serious?”

“Do you think anything else will be on his mind after he sees this?”

Sungmin groaned, sinking down onto the couch beside Leeteuk. “Why didn’t I think of that…”

The older boy patted him on the back sympathetically. “You just wanted to make him happy. It’s not your fault.”

He sighed, staring at the game that he had bought with such enthusiasm. Kyuhyun was going to choose this box of pixels over him. It was a little outrageous, but honestly, he wouldn’t put it past him to do that.

So much for a good Christmas.

-
Kyuhyun’s eyes lit up the moment he unwrapped Sungmin’s gift. “Wow! Really, Hyung?”

He smiled. “You did say that you wanted it, so…”

Everyone was sitting in a circle, and beside him, Kyuhyun grinned and rested his head on Sungmin’s shoulder in delight. “Thanks, Hyung. This makes me really happy.” He could only laugh weakly in response, all hopes of spending the New Year and his birthday with his boyfriend shattering.

Well, at least Kyuhyun was happy.

The game sat on the floor, untouched as other gifts were exchanged, but Sungmin didn’t miss the way his boyfriend glanced at it with longing every once in a while.

-
Just as Leeteuk had predicted, Kyuhyun was nowhere to be seen for the next several days. Sungmin despaired.

-
It was December 31st, and Sungmin was sitting in the park, drawing circles in the snow with his foot. Upon glancing at his watch, he saw that it was nearing midnight-the fireworks would be going off soon. He knew that the others were just watching them from their dorm, since it was far too cold to be outside in the winter like this, but Sungmin didn’t mind. He kind of liked the cold, actually.

“Hyung!” He turned around, surprised at the voice. Kyuhyun? Shouldn’t he be playing Black Ops right now? “Where have you been? I’ve been looking for you everywhere!”

Sungmin smiled, moving over on the bench to make room for his boyfriend. “I guess I just wanted to watch the fireworks from a quiet place.”

“Why didn’t you tell me? I wouldn’t want to greet the New Year without you.” Kyuhyun put his arm around Sungmin, pulling him close. Sungmin couldn’t hide his smile then, gladly leaning against him. “Don’t think I forgot your birthday either.”

“Huh? My birthday?” Sungmin raised his eyebrows. “Why would I think that you forgot it?”

Kyuhyun shrugged. “I don’t know. Knowing you, you probably thought I forgot all about you since you got me Black Ops. Did you think I’d be that ungrateful?”

Surprised, he tried to laugh it off. “I wouldn’t think that!”

“Right,” Kyuhyun said wryly. “That’s why Jungsu-hyung sat me down and gave me a talk, right?”

“He did that?” he asked in horror. “He should stop being such a mother…”

His boyfriend laughed, pulling him closer. “I didn’t forget about you, not even for a moment,” he whispered into his hair, making Sungmin shiver.

“I know,” he whispered back, suddenly feeling very cold and warm at the same time.

The fireworks went off then, and Sungmin’s attention was brought to the sky. Knowing Korea, they were spectacular-they wouldn’t let other countries outdo them in anything. For a moment, he just didn’t think about his insecurities and appreciated the fact that Kyuhyun was actually there, sitting beside him, and not locked up his room, playing Black Ops.

“Look, that one’s in the shape of a heart,” he laughed, pointing up at the sky. “How do you suppose they do that?” When he looked at Kyuhyun for a response, though, he found that the younger boy wasn’t even watching the fireworks. Sungmin’s heart leapt to his throat when he realized that Kyuhyun was staring right at him (kind of like a stalker, he thought-because Kyuhyun did seem like the type to stalk others). “…What?”

“It’s past midnight, so…” The younger boy looked away for a moment, suddenly bashful. “Happy birthday, Hyung.”

“Oh.” Sungmin swallowed. “Thanks.”

When Kyuhyun kissed him, it wasn’t anything out of the ordinary, but upon thinking that he chose to be out in the cold, kissing him, than inside playing Black Ops, made Sungmin’s heart swell.

“I have your gift inside, so let’s go?” Kyuhyun stood up, gently pulling at Sungmin’s hand.

He beamed. “Okay.”

and then they went inside and totally jumped each other 8D
