what am i living for if not for you

ring, ring, ring.

“I think we need to realize that this can’t continue forever.”

It’s a little ironic, how the one person Heechul has approved of has always distanced himself from him.

“What-so are you saying that this is the end of us?”

“No.” Hangeng pauses, and Heechul’s breath hitches. “But I just hope you won’t be too upset when we do end.”

If they were speaking face to face right now, and not on the phone, Heechul would’ve probably kicked him. “You’re always such a pessimist,” he says sourly, irritably swatting Heebum off of his bed.

“You just don’t look ahead. Are you going to the army with Jungsu-hyung?”

“-I don’t know, I haven’t thought about it yet.”

“Exactly.” There’s a moment when Heechul refuses to speak, and Hangeng continues. “Anyway. I have to go-I’m doing some short notice charities for Japan in a bit, so I need to get ready. I’ll talk to you later?”

He scowls. “Fine. Bye.” He hangs up before Hangeng gets the chance to do it first, because if it’s anyone ending anything, it’s Heechul.

He walks out into the kitchen in search of food that’ll quell his bad mood to find Donghae intently discussing something with Ryeowook. Those two are always so enthusiastic and happy-how on earth are they always so enthusiastic and happy? It’s disgusting.

“Oh, Heechul-hyung, did you try?”

“Try what?” He yanks open the fridge, scowl deepening when he finds nothing worth eating.

“I called my own number with Japan’s area code just now,” Donghae says, stretching himself across the kitchen table. “Ryeowookie’s doing it now, too-it’s awesome when someone picks up, ‘cause you know that there’s at least one person who’s alright.” His smile is honest, and Heechul wishes that he could be as sincere as him all the time.

He watches as Ryeowook bites his bottom lip anxiously, cell phone pressed to his ear. After a moment, his face lights up, and he says with a bright smile, “Oh, uh, konnichiwa! Um, ohayo gozaimasu?” His accent is so ridiculous that Heechul would’ve laughed, other than the fact that it isn’t really a laughing matter. Donghae urges him on excitedly with nonsensical Japanese and dramatic arm movements, but Ryeowook turns away, determined to speak with the person on the other end of the line with no distractions.

It’s a little silly, Heechul thinks-here, he’s moping about his potentially crumbling relationship with Hangeng, while thousands of people are dying in the next country over. He should set his priorities straight.

He wanders back into his room, spinning his iPhone in his hand. Foreign words of daijoubu desuka and boku wa Super Junior no Heechul desu are already on his tongue, and he thinks-this matters more. This matters more than himself, more than his feelings, more than Hangeng. So he quickly dials his own number with Japan’s area code, presses his phone to his ear, and waits.

Ring, ring, ring.

No one picks up.

i found the whole calling your own number thing on tumblr and thought it was kinda awesome :) someone did it just a day or two after the earthquake and tsunami, and someone actually picked up. the conversation was disjointed and there was a language barrier, but the good intent was understood, and i just got a little teary-eyed at that. maybe there’s some hope for humanity after all.

konnichiwa = hello
ohayo gozaimasu = good morning
daijoubu desuka = are you alright?
boku wa super junior no heechul desu = i am super junior’s heechul

my japanese is kinda bad, but i’ve been watching anime and j-dramas for about six years, so i hope this made at least a little bit of sense?
