So I'm one of the few people left in the developed world who have not seen any of the Star Wars movies. Any of them. I've been told that my geekiness levels fall exponentially, that I'm a disappointment, that I haven't LIVED until I've seen these epic films.
There's a lot of history behind my stubborn kibosh on the SW franchise. My parents are not moviegoers - my mom's a fan of old films and my dad was a huge (bad) kung fu movie buff. I remember this one kid in grade school who was SO much of a SW fan that he would use a ruler as a light saber, run around making the sounds, and would yell "Force choke!" when he got upset. He was so strange that I never got into SW when I was younger because the weird behaviour was indelibly connected to those movies. When I got to high school I started dating someone who was also a huge SW geek. He insisted that I watch them, I would refuse out of caprice and perversity. That was pretty much the sum of our relationship; no wonder it was doomed.
Now, I would like to say that I'm going to hold out for the indefinite future out of sheer stubbornness and pride (there are so few of us left!), but I think my time as a Star Wars virgin is almost up - there is someone I am willing to watch them for. We've been dating for maybe a month and I'm going to do it... I'm going to watch A New Hope for him.
I'd like to be ashamed of myself for finally falling victim to the hype, but really? I think it's worth it.
