For the first time in almost four months, Mark had managed to find a girl, a girl who was interested in him and even more impressively, whom he was into. Their first few dates had gone surprisingly well and Mark was overjoyed to be able to announce to everyone that he actually had a girlfriend.

“I guess this means we’re not going to get married?” Roger said with just a hint of sarcasm.

“Oh it’s always about you!” Maureen exclaimed giving Roger a tisk tisk look, “so when do I get to meet her?”

Joanne rolled her eyes at Maureen and managed to resist pointing out how hypocritical that statement had been. Excited to show her off, Mark didn’t delay to agree to a movie night at Maureen and Joanne’s apartment with him and his new girl, Vanessa.

Friday night came and Mark and Vanessa headed to their place. Mark knew Vanessa would enchant both girls and hoped that sooner or later he could forget that he was trying to make Joanne jealous and grow to love her.

The night passed in high spirits for everyone. Vanessa was immediately welcomed in and was found by all to be charming.

Maureen and Vanessa hit it off from when she first walked in, a huge relief to Maureen who was tired of movie nights where Joanne and Mark had conversations she could care less about while she tried to stay entertained.

Glad to have someone to talk to Maureen and Vanessa stayed completely set aside from Joanne and Mark for the entire evening.

“Bonding between the girls,” Joanne had called it. But Maureen would have referred it to it more as “flirting with Mark’s surprisingly hot girlfriend”.

“Mark and I are going to go pick up some Chinese.” Joanne said, interrupting Maureen right in the middle of her epic tale about her amazing protest which been unfairly raided by the cops. Joanne almost felt bad for the poor girl, but by some miracle she genuinely seemed to be interested in Maureen’s blatant self-advertising.

“Yeah, whatever…we’ll stay here baby.” Maureen said with a devious smile that normally would have infuriated Joanne.

“So this is going surprisingly well.” Mark said proudly as they were about to re-enter the apartment.

He didn’t care if it was wrong to be excited that by giving Maureen a playmate he got Joanne to himself, he couldn’t remember a night that he had spent so pleasantly since high school.

“Oh yes, Vanessa’s absolutely charming and Maureen just loves her.” Joanne responded. Mark nodded, somewhat upset that his plan was backfiring and making Joanne more jealous about Maurren, and they opened the door.

“Mark, am I really seeing this or have I gone crazy?”

Mark peeked in the door and stared in wonder. “Oh no, that’s definitely happening.”

More amused than upset, Mark observed his charming new girlfriend and his semi-psychotic ex-girlfriend making out on a pile on the couch. He waited for the cries of outrage from Joanne and upon hearing complete silence turned to make sure she hadn’t fainted. She was watching him with a confused yet mischievous look in her eyes.

They both looked from their entangled girlfriends to each other for about twenty seconds before Joanne, to Mark’s shock and delight, said “If you can’t beat them, join them!” and dropping the food in her hands, threw herself into a deep kiss.

At first Mark was too confused to comprehend what had just happened but within moments he, too, had dropped the food and was pressing Joanne against the wall in a hungry kiss.

By the end of the night, Joanne and Maureen had decided to just be friends. Maureen and Vanessa chose to be together, as did Mark and Joanne.

“Well, I certainly never expected to be part of a love square,” Joanne had joked once when the couples were out on a double date. For years it was the running joke between the four unlikely lovers and even when they were married, Mark and Joanne would poke fun at the other two for “stealing their girlfriends”.
