The world is going to hell.

Rabastan is gone, disappeared in the middle of the night, and Rodolphus knows their Lord will pursue him once Potter is taken care of. If Potter is defeated. He hopes his brother has gone far away and concealed himself. This isn’t the life he ever imagined it would be when he first married Bellatrix so many years ago. His love for her is nothing compared to her love for their Lord. He’s the reason Rabastan joined their cause, so he wants his brother to have a chance at a life, even if it’s after the years in Azkaban have nearly broken them.

Since his injuries chasing Potter during the summer still aren’t healed properly, he’s had to remain in seclusion through many of the recent events he’s been told about. Bellatrix comes to see him occasionally, but any love they once might have shared has been destroyed by prison and her desire to serve their Lord more than her wish to be his wife. He hears about the battles, though, and Rabastan told him about Potter’s recent escape from Malfoy’s manor. His faith and belief in their Lord is tarnished, and his devotion has never been comparable to Bellatrix’s, which means he can see things through clear eyes. If Rabastan has finally made a run for it, finally found courage to escape a life he never truly wanted, then Rodolphus believes there’s a chance their Lord will not succeed yet again.

When Bellatrix comes to him, he is still thinking of this, wondering if she knows yet about his brother before realizing she doesn’t care. Their Lord is preparing to go after Hogwarts, suspects he’ll be at Hogwarts, and there are plans for an attack the next day. Rodolphus listens to her talk, remembering the girl he first fell in love with all those years ago. She had told him so many things, and he’d believed them all. Had he merely been fooling himself to think she actually cared about him? Was he simply the best candidate for her to do her duty so she could focus on their Lord’s needs?

Rodolphus is so very tired of it all. He is still so weak from prison that he can’t heal properly from the curse aimed at him during their flight, though the fall did more damage to his bones than the curse did. He wishes he had the energy to run, to follow his baby brother’s example and just escape the nightmare that’s become his reality. Instead, he sits here listening to Bellatrix weave her web and tell her lies, seeing the contempt she is unable to hide as she looks at him and judges him to be weak and not an asset to her Lord. She plays her games, and he lets her win.

She kisses him when she’s ready to leave, eyes shining with excitement and blood thirst that he once shared before prison broke him. He reaches up to touch her face, watching her eyes flicker with emotions as she looks at him, and he knows somehow that this is it. Whatever happens tomorrow, this is the last time he’s going to press his lips to hers. He won’t let her kill his brother without killing him first, after all, and he isn’t confident that she’ll even survive the battle if the whispers he hears are true. After she’s gone, he closes his eyes, ignoring the tears silently falling as he mourns for what one was and for what never will be.
