Title: Consequences Character: Hermione Granger Word Count: 1215 Rating: Any Age Note: This contains spoilers for Deathly Hallows. The summary is beneath the cut. ( Consequences )
Just lovely. I'm so glad you decided to explore this aspect of Hermione from DH, as I think it reflected her character so well -- as does this fic. I totally see her making this decision when it's all said and done and you did a great job portraying it.
Thank you, sweetie. I was really pleased to see more of Hermione's ruthlessness when it came to protecting those she loved come out, even if I'm not sure I'd agree with her choices or not. ♥
I liked this very, very much. I did wonder at Hermione doing that - making the decision for her parents instead of giving them a chance to say farewell and perhaps help in any way they can albeit from afar. Thanks for writing it - I'm in awe at how you've managed to write so much post-DH fic when I'm still processing :)

I think this is how she processes, frankly; some people are like that. How did Isaac Asimov put it? "Writing, to me, is simply thinking through my fingers."
Thank you, honey! And, as the comment says below, I process as I write. The twins hit me the hardest, so I've tried to work through that with a couple of fics. This choice of Hermione's felt IC for me, but I couldn't help thinking about the consquences, too.
"And, as the comment says below, I process as I write."

Oh? I could see where it'll be one of the issues that probably causes discussion. I felt that it was IC for her to make such a choice, maybe not even considering the consequences, but I imagine others won't at all. Thank you!
It rather seriously squicked me out when I read it. We'd had a long discussion a while back on my group regarding obliviators... I think Ed Becerra's argument really struck home. Basically, "When you change my memories you are changing everything that makes me, me. You are effectively killing me and replacing me with someone else that you have crafted for your convenience."
In a way, she killed their minds to save their bodies.
That said, if the words "With their permission, I memory-charmed..." had been at the start of her description, I would have been okay with it - it's an extreme situation, and informed consent means a lot. It might not have been easy to persuade them, but if they knew that being captured with certain information could get Hermione killed, maybe they'd agree to it. But they should have had the choice.
I agree that she should have asked, but perhaps she was too afraid to.
I mean, what if they had said "yes" to her plan? To know that your parents would say "okay" to forgetting about you, to keep themselves safe and happy? What a horrible thought, one that for her might have been good (to know they'd be safe, and she would be able to get her parents back, at the end), but at the same time to know that they would be okay with forgetting about her, forgetting that'd she be in danger all the time, and being fine with it.
Interesting take on Hermione's dealings with her parents in DH. I like the way you handled it--I think her choice was poor and she should have given her parents a choice as you said. Obliviating someone also seems so dangerous after what we read in CoS and GoF. I have trouble believing that Hermione did that to her parents.
Hmm...see, I don't have trouble seeing at all. If only because we've seen in canon that Hermione does things, makes choices, that she doesn't necessarily think through (Umbridge and centaurs, Sneak and Marietta with permanent scarring, body binding Neville during 1st year, capturing Rita and keeping her in a jar, etc.). She can be utterly ruthless if she's trying to protect someone she loves, and she very well might think this was the best solution and get them out of danger without considering that she should ask them or how things will be once the war finally is over. However, everyone sees different things, which makes it interesting. I'm glad you liked how I handled it here!
