I woke up on the couch, with a small elbow up my nose. Blinking, I gazed down at my baby girl. My God she slept wild. Her limbs were splayed everywhere. I blinked rapidly again, chasing the foggy feeling from my head. It went away quickly, one of the perks of my job: the ability to be alert as fast as possible.
I took in my living room. It was dark, not a single light on. The only illumination came from the TV displaying a dvd menu. I checked the clock. 2:13 a.m.
I cursed silently. “Well Harper, that’s what you get for letting your kid talk you into watching Spiderman 1 & 2 back to back,” I yawned.
I shifted my body weight and Lian’s other arm clunked me on the side of my head. “Etai Yazi,” I hissed. “I have to get you into your own bed before you assassinate me.” I stood up, gathering Lian in my arms. Her head clocked me on my chin. “By accident,” I muttered.
Making sure she was properly tucked into my arms I headed for the darkened hallway, kissing Lian’s forehead as I walked.
Halfway to the stairs, I heard the nose. I knew it was weight on the floorboards; hanging around Dick Grayson caused some things to rub on a guy. So I knew it was someone moving, someone that wasn’t me. I cursed under my breath as my eyes darted, looking into the darkness. The noise came again and I shifted Lian to one arm. Someone was in my house;someone had invaded my home.
My mind flew as I searched the hallways and calmed my breathing. There was no way this creep should’ve been able to get into my house. After everything that had happened with poor Sue Dibny, everyone in the cape wearing community had seriously upgraded their home security. I had been no different. Unless they had the code. That was not a train of thought I was happy with.
I passed an end table and immediately grabbed the lamp that was on it. It was the only weapon I had; it would do. I walked slowly; I could hear the invader breathing. He was close. I sat Lian down gently on the floor. I edged closer raising up the arm with the lamp as I did.
Okay Harper, keep yourself between Lian and whoever this freak is.
Suddenly the hall light clicked on.
“Roy, what are you doing?”
“Mia?!” I gasped at the teen that had become as close as a sister. She was clad in gray pajamas and her hair was fuzzy, making a halo around her head. “What the hell are you doing here?”
She sighed. “Ollie and I had this big fight. Connor thought it would be good for me to get away.”
“Why didn’t you tell me you were coming?”
Mia simply shrugged. “Didn’t want to bother you; thought that I’d just crash. And by the time I got here you were sleep and I didn’t want to disturb you.”
I sagged against the wall exasperated. “Next time, definitely disturb me.”
