As usual, please no bashing.
~ Rule One: Moffat lies. When Oswin first appeared, I thought, “Nah, can’t be Jenna’s character. She won’t appear until the Christmas Special.” Then, two seconds later: yup, that’s her. Things like this are the reason I’m spoiler-free. I love the surprise and now I am even more curious about her. And also wondering if Moffat has a thing for introducing characters at their deaths so we know they’re “safe” in future episodes (though a part of me doubts she’s dead). Or, possibly, they’re two different people played by the same actress. Won’t know until Christmas.
~ Headcanon: Amy both models for and runs her perfume company.
~ I thought Seven destroyed Skaro? At least, that’s what I remember happening. (Only saw that serial once, so I could be mistaken, but I don’t think I am.) Huh. Explain!
~ The Predator. That fits. Wow. In fact, that entire bit with the Dalek Parliament is wonderful. (I would have never guessed they’d have one. They always seemed too autocratic.)
~ the Daleks will use their self-destruct mode if they can’t figure out another way to overcome the Doctor. That… the implications about their whole mindset and culture and everything.
~ Yes, for the first time since Nine, I have been creeped out and scared and intrigued by Daleks. Well done, Moffat. Well done.
~ Oswin, hands down. Oswin is awesome. Nothing you can tell me will make me change my mind. She became a Dalek and kept her mind, is an unapologetic genius, possibly not straight, spunky, and yeah, I love her.
~ the Ponds. I love them to pieces. And funny how actually talking-- which we know Amy isn’t good at without being pushed-- can solve things. Just, my Ponds are back. Happy happy happy.
~ BBCA did something very weird: we got two “next week” trailers. One I think from the BBC proper and BBCA’s own. Not unhappy, just a bit confuddled.
Dislikes:
~ the new title sequence. It’s not as elegant, and the colors are oversaturated.
~ I get why Amy shoved Rory away, but it felt stilted. I know divorce happens to couples in their situation, but I would have liked more background. (Also: makes me want to hurt Kovarian even more.) Actually, thinking about it, I would be 100% happy with this complication if there had been even a hint prior to, and Pond Life doesn’t count. (It would have had they aired earlier. One day isn’t much of a hint. Too little time to process.) That’s my only complaint.
~ the erasure of the Daleks’ memory of the Doctor. It almost but not quite feels like he gets a clean slate for what he did to them in the Time War. But memory erasure bothers me anyway. Oh. That’s what bothers me: shades of Donna. It seems we’re supposed to think about this erasure as a good thing because it happened to the bad guys. There are implications here I want expanded on. (Thinking about it: the Daleks will logically interact with the universe, and find out about the Doctor and what he did, and thus get even more upset with him. And now I must ask: if the Daleks knew or guessed the Doctor survived, why didn’t they tell the Silence?)
Overall:
Loved it. My show came back with a bang. Next week’s looks to be interesting. But really, this week’s… It’ll be hard to top. Basically: Ponds! Doctor! Oswin!
