I was going to vote for him once he got the candidacy, but in the last few months his compromises have bothered me. But I was always going to vote for him because McCain bothered me a whole lot more.
And last night, I could see him as President. I felt a little sad for him and his family- I can't think that being President has ever been *healthy* for any family, but that's a choice they made and I won't fault them for it. It's incredible public service, serving your country in a way that requires great sacrifices, and I respect and admire people who choose to do it with such grace.
It is a triumphant story, isn't it? One we need as a country right now. One we need to believe in so we can recreate it.
But honestly? I never bought into the Obama hype of doing everything different, knew he'd have to compromise, and so while his recent backtracking on FISA, etc. has annoyed me, it hasn't disappointed me. I get that he needs to win, and respect it. So long as he understands that human rights organizations and activists are going to put him to the wall like they put his opponent because some things and some people can't wait until November or January.
