Fandom won't give me my life back... even though I ask so nicely. :(

Bonsoir, mon ami(e)! French class has been grueling and fun and all kinds of hilarious, and our teacher is very gay and very awesome. 8D I feel very accomplished now that my Friends page is a bit more manageable - and very, very ~free~ and ~un-awkward~ too.

Anyhow~! I was drowning myself in worry unhealthy amounts of coffee over June and July, and ( Read more... )

Jane Eyre
I… did not like Jane Eyre so much. The recent summary that I gave to a friend reading it for class was, “Jane Eyre is basically: boring, boring, boring, boring, oh hey Rochester is a douche!, boring boring boring, Rochester is more of a douche, more boring, they get married”, so you can see my opinion on the book. It is one of those classics, but… I am not a fan of the Bronte sisters as much as I am of Austen. If you didn’t like Heathcliff, then you probably won’t like Rochester, so just because of that I’d advise against this one. It’s your choice though.

A Brief History of Time
YES. STEPHEN HAWKING. This is a book that is well-worth reading (coming from an astronomy geek, so take this as you will), especially when it comes to modern thought about the nature of our universe. It can be kind of dense in places, and things can be very confusing (and I know I still don’t understand all of it), but definitely worth checking out!

To Kill a MockingbirdNow this is a book that is worth reading. And don’t let the first person ( ... )

Avatar: The last Airbender
This is a gorgeous series, and I mean that in every sense of the word. I know that I was initially a little bit wary of it, considering the show seemed a little bit too childish and anime-knock-off to me, but wow was I wrong. It’s influenced by anime, but the show brings its own sense of style. The first season can be a little bit hit-or-miss (although I love almost all of the episodes desperately), but by the second season it really hits its stride - and the animation, while a little bit “Americanized-anime”, is really gorgeous, especially in later seasons with a stronger budget. The characters are fun, with a lot of depth and thought put into them, and the creators really know how to write female characters, which is refreshing and awesome and I love it! I think that you’ll love it too. It’s got such a good sense of world-building, of a good solid plot interspersed with a lot of fun - it’s lovely! BUT DON’T LET ME TELL YOU. WATCH IT AND SEE ( ... )

Avatar is something I'm really, really wary of given how much everything seems so Americanized. I don't have anything against it, but ever since the movie, I've been insanely skeptical about starting this.

the animation, while a little bit “Americanized-anime”, is really gorgeous, especially in later seasons with a stronger budget. - "Stronger budget" does seem to imply a lot of this - obviously, the show is popular, so the producers are going to invest more. But then again, a lot of anime have strong budgets like BLEACH! and don't really do well in terms of... well, anything. :/

Still, since it seems to be so highly praised by everyone I know, I'll give it a try, because:

♦ I love world-building with a passion.
♦ And hell yeah, it has strong FEMALE characters Take that, Kishimoto! Did I mention I was a sucker for strong female leads? I'm especially looking forward to getting to know Katara. And the Princess of Fire Coutnry... What was her name again? (Zuko/Katara seems to be the most popular pairing in fandom - apparently, because ( ... )

I cannot emphasize it enough: don't let the movie scare you off of this series! There is a reason it is near-universally hated by fandom.

And hell yeah, it has strong FEMALE characters
THE SHEER AMOUNT OF AWESOME LADIES IN AVATAR MAKES ME EYEHEART.

Zuko/Katara seems to be the most popular pairing in fandom - apparently, because of great chemistry and all... Who exactly is Zuko, anyway? Something tells me this pairing is not canon...Zuko is the prince of the fire nation who is sort of one of the main antagonists. And yeah it's not canon ( ... )

Okay, okay! You've convinced me - I'll watch ATLA after I finish catching up on sn_exchange. "Universally hated by fandom" -- wow. The movie must've been super!fail to garner so much hate. DX

I went into watching Avatar thinking that I was going to ship it, considering it seemed to be the preferred pairing among other SasuSaku fans, and I though that they would have that same chemistry - Well, to be completely honest, I really don't see chemistry between... any of characters in Naruto. All I see is a sea of angst. I guess it's up to fandom to expand on Kishi's rather bleak allusions.

I'm puzzled as to why Zuko/Katara is so popular as well given I knew he was one of the antagonists - I've been hearing rumours that the anime's leaning more towards Aang/Katara.

just could not get behind it with as much fervor as I love SasuSaku. Trufax. - lol! Same here - I haven't been able to either. Maybe it's because I used to hate SasuSaku at first, and then I grew to love it - the process was so gradual that I never noticed. I haven't seen any other ( ... )

My download speed is pretty good, so hopefully it will work. Do you have Skype or MSN or something (or any messenger program), so that we can coordinate this? Or should we just watch the first episode and blog about it?

Yup! I have both Skype and MSN, so it's not a problem. I'd prefer going with MSN if that's okay with you? I don't know whether I'd be up to blogging (I usually read/watch something first and then present an overall) - but I'm fine with whatever okay for you! :D (just PM me your e-mail address and I'll add you! ♥)

Hello again! Just wondering how much progress you've made with the episodes, araine! I'm currently going through episodes 3 and 4 and loving them!

I'm only on episode three, but I know that I'll fall further behind over the weekend since there is a con coming up. I'm hoping to blog about it once I get to episode 5 or so, though!

You give a whole new meaning to the word 'organized'. DX I'm so jealous

Jane Eyre is basically: boring, boring, boring, boring, oh hey Rochester is a douche!, boring boring boring, Rochester is more of a douche, more boring, they get married” - Emphasis entirely mine. It's scary how much this sounds like me. I mean, sure, if you just ignore the story and admire the writing for its own sake, it's perfect. Only, the story ruins it, and the style could really have been used to bring more interesting characters to life. :'( Jane and Rochester's "love" seems slapped on. Adn yes, I'm still reading it because like I said, the prose is pretty and I always look at the writing more than the characters anyway. That way when I find myself unknowingly paying more attention to the characters I immediately know that hey, this book is good.

A Brief History of TIme is fantastic, and I'm grateful that such a book even exists. :') You're right - it is a bit dense at times, and despite my obsession with the laws that govern space-time, I still don't ( ... )

But-- you like astronomy?
Oh my goodness yes I do. (I blame Diane Duane for this if I blame anyone.) If I was any good at calculus I would go be an astrophysicist, but... alas, calculus is my downfall. /studied language forever But I love the theory and conceptualization of it.

This confirms that I will be finishing TKaMB soon. Can't wait to actually get into it.
Yay! I am glad to hear it! I hope you enjoy the book as much as I did!

Are you sure starting with the newer Doctors will be... okay? I mean, shouldn't I start with the older ones to get a sense of... background?Well, that is how I did it, and I know a lot of people do the same, and it works pretty well for them. The preferred place to do it seems to be with the 9th Doctor, as there is a big split/tonal shift there. I think that this is mostly so that people can see if they really like the series and have a smaller chunk to watch to get caught up with fandom as a whole, and also because the older stuff is a lot campier. But however you want to watch it, is totally up to ( ... )

butting in to agree with the starting with newer doctors. Doctor Who was brought back starting with the ninth doctor, and as such most young people had never seen it before, so it was introduced as if to a completely new audience. Also, it tends to reference pop culture and a lot of 'real world' stuff, which you will be able to easily keep track of.

(Diane Duane? Wow, you really seem to like science fiction. That, or you're just a fan of world-building *___*).

Like you, I have this mad passion for Physics, but astrology seems like an entirely different place of Physics altogether! lol! Calculus! It was very nice to me for the last two years - I don't know why it's so mean to other people! XD Seriously though, even though I never got the point of calculus, I liked working out problems! ♥

I guess then... the 9th Doctor it is. Then I'll decide whether I want to continue. Seriously, I always seem to be late in catching up with the bigger fandoms. :/
