I cannot emphasize it enough: don't let the movie scare you off of this series! There is a reason it is near-universally hated by fandom.
And hell yeah, it has strong FEMALE characters

Zuko/Katara seems to be the most popular pairing in fandom - apparently, because of great chemistry and all... Who exactly is Zuko, anyway? Something tells me this pairing is not canon...
Zuko is the prince of the fire nation who is sort of one of the main antagonists. And yeah it's not canon.
Funny story about that pairing, I went into watching Avatar thinking that I was going to ship it, considering it seemed to be the preferred pairing among other SasuSaku fans, and I though that they would have that same chemistry. I... did not see the chemistry at all, tbh - and while I could see it as a viable fanon pairing, I just could not get behind it with as much fervor as I love SasuSaku. Trufax.
Aang is... not exactly loltastic, but he isn't exactly the zero to hero-type either. He is kind of the epitome of a good-hearted, carefree hero. I love him a lot. And I think he'll grow on you.

I went into watching Avatar thinking that I was going to ship it, considering it seemed to be the preferred pairing among other SasuSaku fans, and I though that they would have that same chemistry - Well, to be completely honest, I really don't see chemistry between... any of characters in Naruto. All I see is a sea of angst. I guess it's up to fandom to expand on Kishi's rather bleak allusions.
I'm puzzled as to why Zuko/Katara is so popular as well given I knew he was one of the antagonists - I've been hearing rumours that the anime's leaning more towards Aang/Katara.

Maybe it's because I used to hate SasuSaku at first, and then I grew to love it - the process was so gradual that I never noticed. I haven't seen any other pairing done as beautifully as SasuSaku in fandom. SasuSaku has always been special, and always will be, to me. :)
Aang... sounds a bit like the typical male protagonist. But then again, Naruto also was that typical in the beginning, and he still is so typical, but he grew on me. So there's a good chance Aang will grow on me too. ♥
Um, I actually did find a site that lets you watch high quality Wolf's Rain episodes for free - It has a timeout though, and you can only watch as per your bandwidth limit, so the download speed has to be fat. Here's the link. If it's to your taste, then we can start watching together! ♥ Otherwise, we can always resort to Youtube (the quality will be much lower, though).
