indigo girls, veneta, or (15 july 05) @ secret house vineyard

lynn and i made it to eugene (the nearest town to veneta) about three hours behind schedule the night before the show. since veneta was GA, that translated into virtually no sleep (in the hotel) for us. but we weren't crabby when the alarm woke us before the sun came up - we were excited and ready for another IG day (especially lynn since she had skipped the napa and santa rosa shows).

we drove to veneta (20 mins from the motel 6 we were shaked up at) and arrived to the venue hours before the winery officially opened (yes, it was at a winery). there were a few stagehands there who were nice enough to let us on to the property and tell us where the line would form. of course we were first. we did a whole setup with chairs, camping couches, and my laptop so we could watch DVDs. i promptly fell back to sleep.

when i woke up we were still the only ones in line. then finally cornfusion showed up. let the fun begin! our looooong day in line was hilarious. we bought cheap wine once the winery opened and had a lil' wine and cheese picnic. add some smoke to that, and we were all laughing our asses off.

the gates opened on time and we ran. girlyman stood by the stage to watch the ritual running to the spots. nate and ty were yelling "run spike, run!" very funny. i ended up in my spot (center, but slightly amy side, front row of course) and nate came down and said, "i don't think you got the best spot in the house. i think you can see better from the way back." i told him that he'd find me in the back of an IG show the same day i decide that bush, cheney, and rove are really the holy trinity. in other words... NEVER!

we still had a few hours until show time. we bought more wine (which made me "a little drunk."), schmoozed with the people tabeling for planned parenthood, and ate more cheese.

when the show did start, girlyman's set was pretty standard again. they did throw in a request (from a very drunk woman who later annoyed us all during IG's set) for "fall stories," so that was kind of cool.

by the time the indigo girls came on stage, there were plenty of drunk people (that's what happens at a winery, i guess). i'm not talking slightly tipsy like myself and my friends. i'm talking ANNOYING, LOUD, RUDE drunk people. let's see: there was a woman who really wanted to hear the girls do their cover of "uncle john's band" (any seasoned IG fan would know that that amy and emily simply can not do that song without a band). by the fourth song, insetad of calling the request out by name, she started screaming "JERRY GARCIA TRIBUTE!" this continued all night. amy was clearly annoyed and turned down her request several times. she finally spilled her entire beer all over the monitor, pissing amy, emily, and their crew off. then there were the people talking loudly behind me. when the music got quieter, they talked louder. how aggrevating! (i swear, i've learned something from IG shows - i will never go to a concert of a band that i don't care about, stand near the front, and talk throughout the set. never. it is so rude to the fans and the artist alike.) finally, during the debut of "love will come to you" with girlyman, i told them to shut the fuck up. they didn't really listen to me, so lynn turned around, looking all mean and told them the same thing. they got the message. i guess i don't look like i can kick someone's ass, but lynn does. cornfusion, who was standing next to me on the other side, also had some drunk, loud, pushers to contend with all show. but the karma did bite certain people in the ass. by the end of the show "JERRY GARCIA TRIBUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUTE" (yes, the u's got longer) was puking in her wine glass. lovely. and as the venue emptied out, she was laying on the ground. karma, baby. karma.

now onto the actual set. the real highlight of this one was the debut of "love will come to you" with girlyman. they way amy and emily blend their voices with ty, nate, and doris is fantastic. and on a song like "love will come to you," it's just brilliant. amy played "world falls" again (i don't even have to request it anymore. it's sweet!), and was playing so hard, she managed to break a string. sweeeeeeeet. i've never seen amy break a string on my favorite song. i broke down crying during amy's solo of "romeo and juliet." luckily lynn was right next to me to console me.

toward the end of the show, amy and emily reminded us that planned parenthood was tabeling and that we should all sign a petition. amy pleaded with us to challenge bush's supreme court nominee. that appearantly pissed a few people off. ok, hello? if you're an IG fan you know that the girls are very political and activist oriented. and you KNOW that if you go to a show, amy and emily will most likely speak out for their views on stage. plus, everytime you support IG, some of your money is going for the causes that they support. now, you can choose to leave, tune it out, or just grin it and bear it if you disagree. personally, i can not imagine loving and supporting the girls if your politics don't mesh with their's. they are SO political, and 90% of their songs have some political undertome. the politics are just as important as the music and they go hand in hand. you can not seperate amy and emily from their beliefs, because their beliefs drive everything they do. so dude, if you're a big ol' bush-lovin', anti-choice, pro-war conservative, why don't you just support that flag waving counry music yahoo (sorry, i forgt his name) instead? at least you can feel 'good,' knowing that your hard earned american dollars are NOT going to 'fight the greed and the federals, fight the need and the toxic spills.' yup... support the country yahoo and planned parenthood won't see a cent of your money. anyway, that has always been something that baffles me, conservatives who like IG. but then again, i'll never understand it. i for one was thrilled that amy showcased her staunch pro-choice views. (side note: i went to the march for women's lives in DC in 2004, and again, was thrilled that my favorite band was there with me, singing their hearts out for choice).

ok, end political rant.

anyway, after the show lynn and i were exhausted, sunburnt (it was like 110 degrees in line all day in the shade), and ready to get the hell out of veneta. we drove back to the motel 6 in eugene where we promptly crashed.
