Yesterday was Jack Kerouac's birthday. When I was in high school I read On The Road and had the same reaction to that book as I did for Catcher in the Rye: So? Perhaps I needed to be born 20 years earlier and do more drugs to fully appreciate the book. I tend to favor Ginsberg when it comes to Beat writers.
We had dinner with some friends last night and they asked me what I have been doing. I responded by telling them the question should be what HAVEN'T I been doing.
I have been hired to work part-time to provide articles and content for
Family Academy. Last week I researched homeschooling and this week I researched ways kids can save the world. I have also written articles for the website and we are in the process of making a podcast. I will let you know when the podcast "airs".
In addition to that, we looked at offices last week for our business venture. I had been complaining that it's hard for me to work from home because I get distracted by cats and husbands and other assorted things. Nicholas (Mr. Family Academy to you!) agreed and we went looking for office that would fit our budgets. We had the same vision for what we wanted so it was relatively easy. We may have found a HUGE office for pennies and if it all works out we'll have to have an open house office party.
I ran into a friend last week at the SE Artwalk and as we left one of the houses, we stood outside on the sidewalk shooting the shit. She mentioned her company is going to be needing a new copy writer soon. My ears perked up and I gave her the 30-second spiel of my resume. She was very interested and is working on putting together a lunch with me and her boss. Hopefully something good will come out of it.
There is going to be a Communicators Conference in Portland on May 12th and I volunteered to be on the P.R. Committee. We had our first meeting this week and I was overwhelmed by the level of talent in the room. I felt like a goldfish swimming with an ocean of sharks. I hope to get some good contacts out of the process and I get a discount if I choose to attend the conference. Which I will.
I am still producing
A Closer Look Radio and am enjoying the process. Last week Pam interviewed my aunt about life in the circus. For those of you who don't know, my aunt
Pricilla Mooseburger is a professional clown and toured with Ringling Brothers for 3 years. She now has Clown Camp each summer and makes and designs costumes for a living. It was a great interview. Which reminds me, I need burn copies of the interview and send them.
I did other things last week but they don't need mentioning. Today I'm going to try and go for a hike and get some fun in at some point. Tomorrow I'm going to see Alfred Hitchcock's The 39 Steps at Portland Center Stage.
Here are some pictures I took:
Last week I went to the Laurelhurst Theater and saw The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. It was pure Terry Gilliam. I enjoyed it but I can see how others didn't. I wrote a review of the theater (no, not the movie)
here After the movie I wandered around the 'hood and found an interesting 2nd Hand Shop:
That sells hundreds of doorknobs in case you ever run out:
The next day I went to the SE Art Walk and saw these two characters on the fence:
