Big Bare Tree

Big Bare Tree, originally uploaded by indigo_jones.
Inspired by a photo canvas I saw in a shop during my wanderings around town, I decided to do a painting to hang over our bed. Exploring the materials available at Swak (local art supply store) and letting a basic image take root in my head, I went with this double canvas approach and used only three colors: Brijlantblauw (Brilliant Blue), Van Dijckbruin (Van Dyke Brown), and Sienna Naturel (Raw Sienna).

I haven't done a proper painting in years; probably not since I moved to New York eight years ago. I had a bit of a crisis over art in general and seemed to stop. I'm coming to grips with my issues and am trying to get back into some drawing and painting. Baby steps, though.

This painting is somewhat representative of my usual style: focusing on one area of a larger item. I also have a thing for trees. Other than that, I tried to not worry about details and just get a general silhouette impression of the tree branches, rather than agonize over physical details. I may yet go back and rework it, but for now, I'm happy.
