The other night, I went back to work to pick up my iPod and
sarahrowe's purse. I parked beside the elevator in the parking garage with a big stone pillar on my left side and some vehicles parked in the spots behind me. When I went to back out, I was looking straight behind me to avoid hitting the cars and was thinking about work. I cranked the wheel to turn out before a sickening *CRUNCH*. I smashed the front-left of my Microsoft-rental Pontiac Grand Am into the pillar.
Fuck... Amazingly this was my first car accident ever. Damage was entirely cosmetic but non-trivial (picture taking a sledge to the body area below the left headlight). I figured at minimum I would have to pay the deductable on insurance, or maybe Mommy and Daddy Microsoft would take away my car. I e-mailed relocation about my woes and was interested to find there are no consequences whatsoever. I simply took the car back to Avis, signed a form, and they gave me a new one (identical, but beige instead of silver). I don't have to pay anything and the claim goes against Microsoft's insurance instead of mine. Apparently it happens all the time.
Don't I deserve some negative reinforcement for being a moron? Everybody is just being really nice to me about it too... Making sure I'm OK and assuring me its not a big deal. Lack of consequences is really quite creepy.
