indie as fuck...

Your name: Alex
Any nicknames: Mango (Gay shit)
Location: Florida
Age: 16
Occupation: Student? The torch bearer of rock and roll? Prostitute? Lou Reed's hookup? Woody Guthrie's Ghost?

Bands/Artists you enjoy: The VU, Love, Bouncing Souls, Sun City Girls, Ornette Coleman, Albert Ayler, John Coltrane, Husker Du, Gorilla Biscuits, Quicksand, Rites of Spring, Minor Threat, Guitar Wolf, Woody Guthrie, Johnny Thunders, Thelonious Monk, Johnny Cash, the Who, the Stones, Sonics, Standells, Seeds, Smog, Spacemen 3, Spiritualized, Wu Tang Clan, Aesop Rock (I know, seriously, wtf is up with that shit? I actually think he's a good lyricist. I'll explain more if you so choose), The Stooges, the Not, Big Star, Lou Reed, Against Me, Madeline, Defiance, Ohio, Jan Hyung, Tom Russell, The Replacements, whatever, top five me or something, this is getting repetitive and obvious

Movies you enjoy: Apocalypse Now, Persona, Requiem for a Dream, M, Bicycle Thief, Stop Making Sense, Casablanca, Maltese Falcoln, La Dolce Vita, Seven Samurai, Zatoichi, Ran, Dreams, Kurosawa really doesn't fail...

How do you keep informed about new music, movies, etc? PITCHFORK

You just opened your own music venue. Describe it (i.e. size, location, any other details): I'd serve tea, because tea is better than coffee. It'd have posters up on the walls from various concerts/artists and artwork from locals who I thought made good artwork. I'd have Mitch Clem do a picture to give me instant punk cred and behind the counter would the picture of woody guthrie seen below blown up 21108470461 times so as to encompass the entire wall. In the background would be Joni Mitchell records or Caetano Veloso or Gil or random tropicalia. There'd probably be a day when I'd be annoyed and just play Merzbow or Beaulieu or some noise shit. But then I'd make no money and be sad.

If you could book any band/artist for opening night, who would it be? Any? Woody Guthrie.

Do you play any instruments? Guitar, sorta kinda harmonica, and I fuck around on bass.

If you could play any instrument, what would it be? Sax.

Are you in a band? If so, who are your influences? n/a but my influences are the bands I like, obviously.

If not, imagine you are in a band. What would it sound like? A variety ranging from VU to Son House to Napalm Death to trying to imitate doo-wop and laura nyro. I don't want to play one type of music. That gets boring. I'd like to play a variety. There ain't nothing wrong with a band playing power pop and emo and hard core and folk on different nights.

What would be your ideal job? Musician or Screen play writer/director.

Where's your favorite place(s) to shop? HOT TOPIC@!

Any hobbies? Chess.

Say something intelligent about 5 of the following 8 bands:

Deerhoof: Gay.

Joy Division: Ian Curtis had an awful voice that worked great with the stark and bare music. If you check out their real early stuff as Warsaw, you can see better the progression from this Stooges like punk rock band to this post-apocalyptic nihilist post-punk art group. They get boring after a while since their sound gets repetitive, but when it's not, they're top stuff.

My Bloody Valentine: I like their lush sound that Shields creates. They said he played while moving the whammy up and down and whatever, I dig it. They're the band everyone says is making a new album and all, but if they don't, I won't cry about it. Loveless is a masterpiece and there's no 'blank spot' in the music. Sonic Youth do that also sometimes and it's something to strive for because to do it good is pretty tough I'd figure.

Husker Du: One of my favourite of all time. The fact that they could go from playing at 100 mph to playing these great melodies is enchanting in itself, the fact that they do it AMAZINGLY is unbelievable. Chartered Trips is one of the best songs ever written and Zen Arcade rivals Let It Be (the 'mats) for the best teenage album recorded. Seriously, it's essential listening if you're 15 or 16 or 17 and sorta disillusioned with society. Their influence on music is really only rivaled by a few bands, see Minutemen and VU.

Drive Like Jehu: wwjd

Pavement: Alright, you know, Sonic Youth is so much better at creating noise that's easy to listen to, but whatever. I hated Pavement for a long time because I read that they compared a session they had to a Sun City Girls song, but that was Bonnie Prince Billy saying that, so I gave 'em a listen. Slanted and Enchanted is actually real good. Here is a great song and Summerbabe is mos def cool, but there's better shit out there. Sebastian said they ripped off the Fall and I dunno, I don't hear it, and it seems like I'm the only one, but c'mon, listen to the Fall, listen to SY, listen to GBV or any other indie band out there too. Pavement are not the be all end all of music, they're not even close.

Slint: Is this the closest jazz comes to being listed here?

The Velvet Underground: The best band ever. Easily my favourite of all time. I idolize Lou Reed and John Cale and Sterl and Mo and fuck, the whole group so much. Every album is gold. +Nico has every song so perfectly crafted. Take a song from that album and you can find countless bands who have spent careers just imitating that one song. WL/WH is my favourite since it's what I think Lou Reed aimed for when he wanted to play rock and roll. It perfectly combines his love for rock with Cale's love for experimentation with the primative rhythm section of Sterl and Mo. VU is what Lou Reed wanted when he wanted to be a singer/songwriter. He couldn't pull off folk, but he could pull off wandering songs comprised of downtrodden poetry. Loaded is in an incorrect song order. Lou was particular about his albums telling a story and even Loaded sorta does when it's played in the right order. It's actually a lot better. So, do I say the typical shit about Sweet Jane making Lou Reed the poet laureatte of rock and roll for years to come? Do I say that Rock and Roll is the story of every kid who heard music and realized that was his calling? Do I say that Venus In Furs is one of the most hauntingly beautiful songs? Or how Heroin is an artistic masterpiece? Or how Sister Ray is beyond words?

If you were to make a movie about your life, who would direct it? Kubrick, duh.

Make a 10 song or less mix, with any theme you want.

Windows Down Sing Along That You Gotta Drive Fast To

1. Bouncing Souls- Manthem
2. Laura Nyro + Labelle- Jimmy Mack
3. The Who- A Quick One
4. The Count Five- Psychotic Reaction
5. Sam Cooke- Twisting the Night Away

That's all. I hate themed mix tapes. Why can't I list random awesomeness instead?
[03:53] threechordme429: say "fuck you im not awnsering because sebastian said it didnt matter"

Why do you want to join this group? I like to rock and I love to roll when the music's running thru my soul (sebastian said it was a decent place to hang out?)

Do you consider yourself indie, or pretentious? The two are mutually exclusive?

Photos. Of yourself. Three or so.
