The World Cup of Hockey and the tennis U.S. Open both started today, and I think my brain is going to explode! I don't think I can handle all of these sports tournaments, especially since those Olympics just ended. God, didn't it seem like they went on forever? I mean, I love the Olympics more than anyone else I know, but even I was getting a little sick of it by the end. A few final Olympic thoughts from me:
-- China rules ping pong. Why do they love it so much? I heard the ping pong analyst Bill Clement refer to a Chinese woman as "the mongoose of women's table tennis." I've yet to determine whether or not that's a good thing.
-- Speaking of Bill Clement, he's a former Philadelphia Flyer (from the '70s, so he was a Broad Street Bully) and he is normally the A color commentator for ESPN's NHL coverage. So naturally, Bill Clement covered ping pong and badminton at the Olympics. Huh?
-- The US divers got no medals. That. Is. Pathetic. Greg Louganis, where are you??
-- I hate synchronized swimming so much more than I realized. It's so, so awful. God I hate it.
-- I just adore the Greek national anthem! It's great. It's got a nice Greek tune and it's short and peppy. I just love it. The Japanese anthem? Not so much. It's so depressing. I'd like the American anthem better if anyone could actually sing it. That's why I like the Canadian one so much--because people don't have a problem reaching those notes. But the all-time best national anthem in the history of anthems? The French one. There's just no beating it. I don't care what you think of France or the French people--they've got one hell of an awesome anthem.
-- Al Trautwig (gymnastics commentator) needs to shut his big fat mouth.
But now I'm switching gears and focusing on the hockey World Cup. The last time this tournament was held was 1996, and the Americans won in an awesome final over Canada. Mike Richter, my all-time favorite goalie, won that tournament for the Yanks. On a more personal note, this last World Cup was when I discovered how much I loved Pat LaFontaine. Anyway, this is likely to be the last elite-quality hockey we'll be seeing for who knows how long due to the pending work stoppage in the NHL, so enjoy while it's here, people.
hockey,
olympic fever. catch it.
