I have an ambivalent relationship with the series of Robotech novels, based on the 1980s anime mash-up. On one hand, some of the novels introduced concepts that helped to soothe the various issues I had with the way other continuities handled my favourite characters and things, and also provided me with fanfic fodder. Until now, I disbelieved speculation that the second season of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic was catering to the Bronies. The only apparent proof was that the series sometimes indulged in insanity and weirdness, and I remained unconvinced--in fact, I was damn happy it was there, because it proved that girls' cartoons can be nuts, too. Re-watching the David Cronenberg version of The Fly reminds me why I ended up not liking this movie, despite wanting very badly to, and being able to praise it whole-heartedly. Perhaps the issues even came into a starker light now that I’m older.
