In contemplating "the popularity of the Officer's Pod," I began reflecting on how its design had been placed alongside the "human" mecha from Macross in the initial set of designs for Battletech... While I don't especially keep up with news about "robot toys" and other "anime merchandise," merely buying DVDs faster than I can watch them, I seem to recall hearing about the Regults being made into recent toys, so maybe there's hope for the Glaug yet.
I don't know if they're my "favourites," but I suppose that I have a soft spot for the Destroids from Macross. This may come from my "sympathy for put-upon fictional characters" kicking in when I was reading the Robotech novels, and forming the impression that the Destroids always seemed to get obliterated with little trouble on the part of the Zentraedi before the Veritechs swooped in... nowadays, having seen the series itself, I think a bit more that they in fact survive about as well as Valkyries without main characters in them.
I have a vague memory of the Glaug popping up in Battletech stuff when I was googling for Zentraedi material a while ago.
Hee. I have the Revoltech Regult, and I love it. :D Regults seem to have more toys made of them, though, probably because they are an "army". Still, I recognize that the percentage of "enemy" Macross mecha toys and model kits is pretty weak. Maybe that's why I broke down and bought that Milia 639 figure a while ago; because there was nothing else. Maybe I'd even buy her pink Q-Rau.
Speaking of the novels, I forgot to mention that either "End of the Circle" or "Rubicon" makes mention of Kazianna at the controls of an Officer's Pod. Maybe that influenced my choice of avatar for this post. I'd like to know more about that...can a female character just up and use mecha geared for males? Or was it a mistake on the authors' part? (Then I remember Temjin and his Q-Rau from Macross Frontier....)
I have a recollection from my recent re-reading of the novels that both of those books mention Kazianna in an Officer's Pod, but that in The End of the Circle she somehow switched from a pod to a Quadrono... As for the other question, though, I'm afraid my reaction would be "of course a female Zentraedi could use a Battlepod or Officer's Pod or Fighter Pod, the same way a female pilot can use a fighter," but then under the tutelage of the "new outlook" fans I stepped away from "mental control" and realms beyond that in my interpretation of Robotech and a good deal of mecha anime beyond it... Not that that scene in Macross Frontier didn't leave me a little surprised, though.
Of course Kazianna in a Quadrono is her most prominent weapon in EotC. Bad me for forgetting to mention that.
I just had a vague idea that the gender-typed mecha might have different structures and strength levels, due to the sexual dimorphism of the pilots themselves. Granted, I have no idea how that would actually work.....
I was totally surprised by Temjin loading up into a Q-Rau, given how, *ahem* retro he is. (I really need to finish that episode review)
