Madara Uchiha is considered a "founding father" of the Uchiha clan and was the first of the family to activate the Mangekyo Sharingan. He had a younger brother who followed closely in his footsteps, even gaining the Mangekyo Sharingan for himself, and together they ruled over the Uchiha during a time of constant warfare. Eventually, due to the Mangekyo's constant strain on his eyes, Madara went blind. He did everything he could to reverse the blindness but nothing worked. His brother, believing in Madara as future of Uchiha, offered up his own eyes. Madara accepted this sacrifice and took his brother's life, thus gaining the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan and unprecedented power.
During the clan wars, Uchiha became renowned as the most fearsome, and Madara's power was so great that only one ninja, Hashirama of the Senju, could rival his abilities. Over time both clans desired an end to the constant fighting, and the Senju of the Forest offered the chance for an alliance. Madara was against such a move, but with the entire clan in favor of it, he was forced to agree. Together, Madara Uchiha and Hashirama Senju founded Konohagakure in the Country of Fire, setting the precedent for future hidden villages throughout the five countries.
It was not long after Hashirama declared himself the First Hokage that Madara began to suspect that the Uchiha were being repressed rather than serving as equals in the new village's government. Outraged, Madara wished to challenge Senju, but none of the Uchiha would stand with him. Still, thinking of the future of Uchiha, Madara confronted Hashirama alone at the Valley of the End and was defeated in battle... but not killed, as was believed.
He spent the next half-century in hiding as a hermit, with a mask to conceal his face, but a young genius of the Uchiha clan, Itachi, somehow learned that he was still alive and approached him with an offer. Madara would be allowed to assist in slaughtering the clan and quench his thirst for revenge, but in exchange, Itachi insisted that he must not harm the rest of the village. Madara agreed, and even took Itachi on as a student. He taught Itachi about the Mangekyo Sharingan and the most powerful eye techniques that could be utilized. Together, they proceeded to slaughter every Uchiha except one... Itachi's younger brother, Sasuke.
Madara created a criminal organization called Akatsuki to execute his new plans for destruction. He placed a boy named Pein as the leader and controlled the organization from the shadows. After the Uchiha massacre, Madara invited Itachi into Akatsuki (knowing even then that Itachi was a spy for Konoha), and the organization proceeded with its plans to gather the Bijuu, with the ultimate goal of using the demons to cause worldwide chaos and build a new, truly peaceful society on the ruins of the old.
After the death of Sasori, Madara joined the organization under the assumed identity of Tobi. For a time, his true identity was known only to Pein, Konan, Itachi, and Zetsu. He was partnered with Deidara and, like the others, was sent on missions to gather Bijuu. In the meantime, he paid close attention to Itachi's activities, particularly concerning Konoha and Sasuke. Ultimately, he knew that Itachi planned to sacrifice himself so that Sasuke could gain the power to fight Madara and Akatsuki. Madara, however, had other plans for the youngest surviving Uchiha.
