Montgomery, did we learn about Basquiat in Humanities? Jeez, certify my idiocy for not being interested the first time if we did. I was watching a show on American art history and I was captivated by his segment. His use of words as an abstraction in his paintings was insanely intriguing. He's definitely one of my favorites now.
Duchamp is still my favorite, though. His innovation with ready-made art delights me to no end, though probably not as much as he delighted himself. He outraged those pretentious, overly serious art snobs by placing the ordinary into the context of art, to make simple things remarkable... just because they are!
I wouldn't want to feel like I'm making a list based on importance or talent, but after Duchamp I'm fascinated by Warhol, Lichtenstein, O'Keefe, and now Basquiat.
I think this is the first attempt at an intellectual topic I've ever made on this thing. How tragic.
