When I booked the car in for its annual service and MOT I did wonder whether doing so in the middle of the Olympics was a good idea, since the service centre is in Walthamstow which in inside the 'Games Zone'. Even in an ordinary year the 5 mile journey can take an hour in the morning (they open at 9) and there are always rush hour queues down to Charlie Brown's Roundabout. However, the Ministry of Transport waits for no man. Now woman neither. So no choice.
Gave the dogs an early walk and then left at quarter past 8. There wasn't a sniff of traffic on the road down to Grange Hill (where it's normally nose-to tail at that hour). No delays on Charlie Brown's. As we rumbled over the cattle grid off the A406 it was only 8.30. So I pulled in to the Homebase car park and we waited for twenty minutes, on the basis that we were unlikely to find a parking space anywhere near the service station to wait 'til they opened.
We rolled into the station at dead on 9, dropped off the car and picked up the courtesy car (when you've been driving a diesel you forget the sheer pleasure of driving a petrol car that actually responds to the gears and can get away from traffic lights at something less than the pace of a snail), and were back home in twenty minutes.
Apparently everyone really is staying off the roads in London for the Olympics.
And now I have to finish-and-post my Daily Deviant fic.
