Lady Computer Geeks

lil_shepherd pointed out that Primeval's new techie, Jess, isn't really up to the standard set by Garcia (Criminal Minds) or Abby (NCIS), both of whom are spunky, super-intelligent ladies who give the female audience some point of identity when they're not ogling the male crumpet. Jess seems to occupy the space vacated by first season Abby as a (lack of) clothes horse for the male viewer. This is annoying as she's a great missed opportunity to address the (other) casting problem that the show has, namely ageism. You wouldn't know that the UK (and particularly the Civil Service) has an aging workforce watching this show. Whatever happened to the tough, intelligent older woman of the sort typified by le Carre's researcher Connie Sachs (who I note is being played by Kathy Burke in the forthcoming version of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy - nice casting all round there).

You know, I am really beginning to sympathise with all those actresses of 'a certain age' who never get a crack at roles in action/adventure stuff the way the guys do.
