Will couldn't stand it any longer.
He hated being on the outs with Magnus, and he hated the fact that it was her birthday and they still weren't speaking. Maybe what he was about to do was really stupid, and maybe it would just end in another awkward situation like the one at the clinic, but if he was careful, maybe it wouldn't.
So he got up, spent some time at work, then went to the kitchen to make Magnus a birthday cake. Will had spent a lot of years living off student loans, paying off student loans, or just plain broke, so he had learned to cook to an extent--making something out of nothing was definitely a specialty. It didn't always look great, but it was always edible and most of the time even pretty good.
There was a little bit of chocolate in the kitchen. Not enough to make a whole chocolate cake, but it was enough to make chocolate frosting for a plain cake. Magnus liked chocolate. Will knew that, because she stashed chocolate in her desk when she thought no one was looking.
When the cake cooled, Will frosted it and took it to Magnus's hut.
And knocked.
Loudly.
And cleared his throat and waited.
