I've mentioned in passing the Super Secret Surprise Baby Shower
here and
here, the preparations of which derailed my (ahem) regular blogging. I suppose it's only fitting that since that party had prevented me from blogging for three weeks (as if!) I should get at least one blog post out of it.
The Shower is for my sister-in-law Michelle who is expecting a baby boy. I am not even kidding when I say that I've been planning her shower in my head practically since I heard the news. I know, I'm crazy that way. But I only really started doing anything about the party when I asked her about a month ago when she was free to have a party, and who did she want to invite. So, it wasn't really a surprise, since she knew there was going to be a shower, she just didn't know anything about it. Or so we thought. Hirap talaga ng too smart for your own good. Kaya ayan,
bina-blindfold.
Anyway, this post isn't about the party (which was a complete riot, by the way). If you want to see some pics, check out Michelle's
site. This post is about some of the stuff I made for her party.
Immediately I knew what theme I wanted to work with on this shower. Formula Juan! One of my
favorite baby names when I was pregnant with Lia. So I searched the net for pics or info about other Formula One baby showers that other people must have done before. I mean, I can't have been the first person to have thought it up right? Of course.
In my googling, I found this
very talented lady and I swear if she ran her business here in Manila, I would have ordered diaper cakes from her. As it is, she's based in Dubai. But her
Speedy Baby Cake was sooo beyond cuteness that I was inspired to make my own.
I've seen diaper cakes before, in baby expos and stuff, and frankly I was never a fan. They all look like a bunch of diapers tied together with a teddy bear stuck on top. But when I saw her site, I loved how none of her cakes look like they're made of diapers, and (nearly) everything she uses to decorate her cakes are things that the baby can use when he or she is born. Onesies, bibs, socks, etc. So, aside from the ribbons and little cardboard cut outs, all parts of the diaper cake will be kept and used by the baby in the future. Yes, even the little F1 toy car. And while he's not yet born, they served as great decorations for the baby shower.
It took forever to make these cakes because for one, I decided to make them table centerpieces. Which meant I had to make 3 or 4, depending on how many guests confirm. And second, red and yellow, not to mention black, are not very popular baby clothes colors. All baby clothes seem to be white, pink or baby blue. I scoured Greenhills, SM and Market! Market! for all the red and yellow baby clothes I could find and came up with just enough to make 4 cakes. Actually, not even. Cause the mittens and socks in the picture above are already hand-me-downs from Lia and Desi.
It was such a good thing that ever reliable Divisoria had cheap F1 miniature cars, just like the one on Nurullita's cake. Well, actually hers was nicer. But I BET mine were cheaper.
Each of the four cakes contained 30-32 Prokids disposable diapers. One was wrapped in a Ferrari shirt, the rest were wrapped in a white cloth diaper. All together, I used 3 onesies, 3 bibs, one pair of shoes, one pair of sandals, one face towel, a pair of mittens and a pair of socks. Some ribbon and some paper, and of course 3 toy F1 cars. Oh, and 10x10 inch illustration boards for the base of each cake. And everything was held together with masking tape, for easy removal and reuse. (The red and yellow rumpled cloth on which the cakes rested belonged to the caterer.)
Oh, and they all had balloons stuck to them before the party started, and then my daughters arrived and demanded to play with the balloons. They were gone by the time the guest of honor arrived. As the party progressed, some of the cars disappeared. Hahaha! Pasalubong for little boys at home.
I don't know where they are right now though. I can only imagine these cakes cluttering up Michelle's otherwise pristine condo, or maybe she's dismantled them already so that they're ready to be used at the drop of a hat. Wherever they are, I had waaayy too much fun making them, and I'm even happier that everything I used to make them will be worn by my future nephew soon enough. :-)
He's the only thing more exciting to me than the new house. I can't wait to meet him and be the best, most rocking-est Tita in the world.
