Untitled- Sara Vance
by Chelsea Backus

“Love, Laugh, Live”, those are the words tattooed on the left hip of Sara Vance. The quote stands embodied with a green, four leaf clover, symbolizing each of her life long friends and her. The tattoo is the product of a spontaneous train ride to Chicago one day from their sleepy hometown of Kendallville, Indiana. Friends say that there is absolutely no one like the artistic, impulsive and forever optimistic Sara Vance.

Sara walks into a room appearing a bit shy, but always flaunting a smile and an air of mystery. You can never tell what she is thinking. Her butter cup blonde hair is cut just above her shoulders and accentuates her fair skin and blue/green colored eyes. She and her friends Brittany and Nicole Mazzola describe their style as similar to Avril Lavigne, but claim that they sported the rock look first. Nicole Mazzola said jokingly, “We never realized that our style was 80’s back then, no one ever told us that we were unoriginal”. Far from unoriginal, the girls sat and told countless stories about Sara’s eclectic and strong character.

Sara’s greatest influences are her friends, music, her mom, and her boyfriend of three years. She shares that she has not always walked to the beat of her own drum, but spent many of her early years trying to conform-to be popular. Things began to change when she became friends with Brittany and Nicole in the 7th grade. The moment that shaped their lives forever was when they stole Sara’s brother’s CD collection. Listening to Blink 182 in a tent in her backyard would later become an infamous night in history for the three girls. Here is a quote from Sara’s favorite song, “Untitled” by Blink 182, “You needed time to grow, and now just as things change, as well my feelings do, in time things rearrange”. No more would they care about conventional ways. The most important things were the music and each other.

The girls say that they average going to 2 music shows a week and estimate that they have seen around 100 shows and concerts total. They enjoy big name rock artist such as Blink 182, but have begun to show more interest in local Muncie and Ball State talent.

Her rebelliousness is not influenced from her music and friends alone, but from her mother as well. Her mom encourages her to be proactive in times of question. In High School, Sara’s Principal made a rule to ban holes in denim but allowed some provocative dress to continue to be acceptable. She was angered; this was her style. She wondered what difference small holes by kneecaps made. Sara’s mom inadvertently mentioned ways that they could protest. The next day Sara and friends covered the holes in their jeans with tape that read “Freedom of Expression”. In Addition, the girls passed out flyers to students that told about their first amendment rights. Sara said “The school never mentioned it again”.

Never underestimate this shy and sweet girl. Although she is always caught wearing an innocent smile, she is a force to be reckon with. She has found herself at such an early age. She is loyal to her beliefs, friends and family and to herself. She is the product of a supportive family, of loving friends and of music that speaks to her. She is artistic, impulsive and the forever optimistic Sara Vance.
