Movie Reviews

Yes, its that time again, time for movie reviews! In the last two weeks I have seen two new movies. And now whether you care, or not, I am going to give my opinion about each of them. Warning, I may give away certain parts of the movies in my reviews so be warned.

Dreamcatcher: Take one part " Tommyknockers", add a few dashes of "Stand by me", put in a few splashes of that "Tales from the Crypt" movie (the one Steven King was in), and throw in a pinch of new material. Whirl this all around with your shiny Kitchen Aid mixer and what do you have? Dreamcatcher! I, personally think Steven King has lost it and should retire. There is a rumour he might. When you start ripping yourself off, it's time to hang it up. You have aliens like "Tommyknockers", you have the touching story of boyhood friends a la "Stand by Me" (they even find a body by the railroadtracks except this time it's alive!) and there is a creeping red fungus stuff that reminds me of that GREEN fungus stuff in that "Tales from the Crypt" story where Steven King is turned into the grassman. I will say my husband liked this movie quite a bit, but he is a sci fi junkie and will watch any crap as long as it's in front of his face. My god the man watched "Master of Disguise" one of the worst moveis I have ever seen! He is also extremely forgiving when it comes to sci fi. He even watched "Ghosts of Mars" if that gives you any indication. The movie dragged as well, the pacing was pretty slow. Not much happens for the first 30 minutes, then it becomes an all out gore fest, and then it gets slow again. One things I have always admired about Steven King is his character development. The guy might not be a good technical writer, but he does well with character development. Not in this movie. I could care less about any of the characters and the most developed thing we see is Jason Lee's fixation with toothpicks. Watching Damian Lewis try to play two roles after he is taken over by Mr. Grey is painful, he looks absolutely ridiculous. The main way you can tell when he is Mr. Grey is he slips in to a british accent. Then there is the scene where the military guy shoots down the evil military guy's helicopter with a handgun, while he is wounded! Oh, yeah, that is realistic. The ending is boring and predictable, and doesn't really leave you feeling satisfied. All in all I give it a one and a half stars out of five. To be avioded!

Willard: I have to preface this by saying I love Crispin Glover and I love rats, so that undoubtly will make my review for this movie higher. Willard is the story of a man who is painfully lonely and put upon. His boss is merciless, he has an aging sick mother, his father is dead, and he has no friends to speak of. That is until he meets Socrates, but Socrates is a rat. Eventually he meets Ben, another rat, and all of their little rat friends. He builds a big rat army to take out his enemies. How cool is that? Wouldn't you juts love to be able to take people out with a pack of rats? Who hasn't dreamed of that? Well, I sure have. I loved watching all the rats in this film, they are literally everywhere, and Crispin Glover is at his creepy best. I particularly like the scene in the funeral home where he scream at the man dealing with his parent's estate. I have actually taken to calling one of my ferrets "Socrates" (she is a light coloured one like Socrates the rat in the film) as a joke. This film does not break any new ground, per se, and you can tell what is going to happen for teh most part, but I still left the theatre feeling sated. Maybe I will develop a ferret army to take out my enemies. What do you think? Three and a half stars out of five.
