The email

Duncan had managed to keep Bella from any further ideas about some sort of "marriage" between them, and decided to keep a low profile. After all, not keeping one was the reason that Aidan had been kidnapped, right?

Undiscovered was still doing well, and Athos was as annoying a roommate as always. He and Methos were friends again. Honestly, with all things so quiet and his birthday coming up in less than a few weeks, Duncan was just waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Then, it did.

He got an email from April. Duncan hadn't really been checking things recently, preferring to enjoy the quiet, but something nagging told him he needed to check up on Aidan. It was simply one of those times, like all the others, when he'd known Richie was in danger, or someone else needed his help. Aidan had chosen a different teacher -- Korda -- and Duncan had put his trust into the man not to let anything happen to his kinsman.

He sat for a good solid fifteen minutes, reading and re-reading the email. He stood from his desk slowly, and walked to his weapons cabinet.

After removing the axe, he proceeded to demolish both the computer and the desk until splinters of wood and shards of glass were everywhere.

Very calmly, he slipped on his trenchcoat and grabbed his katana, tossing the axe to the side. "I'm going out," he told Athos, not bothering to explain where or why.

Wes had been a good man. He'd trusted Korda to take care of Aidan.

I failed them all. It's my fault they're dead. If I'd been his teacher instead, if I'd been the one to be there for him... if things hadn't gotten strained after the kidnapping, then maybe... maybe...

Duncan continued to blame himself as he walked out the door to the bookshop, locking it up for business, and set out to find whoever killed his kinsman and avenge him.
