Game that is surprisingly amazing! Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: the game. Technically a tie in to the movie given that Universal plastered their logo across the start, but stylistically modeled more after the graphic novels. But this isn't the thing that is cool about it, because honestly, I'd only vaguely heard of the graphic novels given that Amazon kept recommending them to me, probably because of all the comics I buy on there. XD (and I didn't even know there was a movie until, like, yesterday when I saw the review in the Globe XD)
No, the amazingly awesome thing about this game is that it's done entirely in 8 bit style. All beautifully done sprites and chiptunes. My brother described it as being exactly like River City Ransom. An old style beat em up where you can power up and stuff too by buying things in shops. (I laugh forever over the fact that since it's set in Toronto, all the money you collect is Canadian coins. You can see the caribou on the quarters! AND TOONIES! THERE ARE TOONIES! THIS IS HILARIOUS TO ME! XD XD XD)
And all the gaming references. Some insanely obscure. ♥ I'm going to assume this one must be in the books because it comes up a lot but they reference Clash at Demon Head. I CANNOT BELIEVE SOMEONE ELSE EVEN KNOWS THIS GAME EXISTS TO THE POINT OF WANTING TO REFERENCE IT! If you know what Clash at Demon Head is you are awesome, if you don't get thee a NES emulator and to a rom site because that game is six different kinds of ridiculous. And stupidly hard. And had the most retarded final challenge ever (you had to collect these six medallions through the game. And then at the end the medallions were used to defuse a bomb and you had to use them in a certain order to do so. You had about... maybe a minute to do it in, six tries, and the order changed every single time you did it. Beating that part was a combination of memory and shear dumb luck. XD)
The only thing about the Scott Pilgrim game that gives me a sad is that it's four player co-op, but it's local co-op only. And the PS3 (which is what both me and the brother wound up buying it on.... I don't know if it's on the Xbox or not, I'd assume so?) is really weird about tying user profiles to a single console. So if we want to play co-op, one of us (usually me) can't use their profile and therefore can't get trophies. It's lousy. But the game is still awesome and made of ♥
Of course, all this has done is make me want to play NES games. So I started scrounging for roms (since it's easier than digging out cartridges and old consoles) And while I was scrounging things up I wound up downloading Earthbound because it's been forever since I've played it (although I really don't have patience for RPGs anymore) and is there a translated rom for Mother 3 in existence, because I can't seem to find it. Not easily anyway And I downloaded the Megaman Starforce games to give it a shot and to attempt to understand Gale's Kizuna XD XD XD But ugh, DS emulators are still lame and awkward and don't have controller support. Although better than the last time I tried to use one.
Going to play Earthbound now! :D :D :D
