This was my first day of school. Everything went fine. My Modern American Poetry class should be pretty awesome. We looked at some Ezra Pound today, and a little Robert Frost. It was mostly just tips on how to read this stuff that can be very complicated and allusion-filled.

The Honor Code signing went pretty well yesterday. After the ceremony, TKL told some members of the Council that he liked how we said "Congratulations" or "Welcome to Sewanee" after each student signed the document. Nathan Batey cited this as a true indicator of my contribution as the softer, feminine influence on the otherwise all male Council.

Dr. Reishman complimented me on my speech and said it was a job well done. Dr. Engel introduced himself and said some nice things about my speech as well. Then he asked if I was an English major and followed it up by demanding to know why he's never had me in class. "Don't you like Milton or Chaucer?" "I took Chaucer from Dr. Benson." "Oh. He does a better job than I could."

So, basically, I'm pretty pleased with how everything turned out. I took a new direction with the speech than years past. I told the freshmen that anyone can be frightened into obedience, but not everyone can be motivated. I made them into caretakers of a one hundred year tradition instead of obeyers.

How did I react to all of this? I e-mailed Erle a nerdy Sewanee enthusiast rant that I knew only he could appreciate. He did, indeed, react as I expected. We both felt warm and fuzzy. The end.

Then at the Greek house residents meeting last evening, Dean Loyd complimented me on my speech. Hopefully that was some good PR for ADT. Never hurts to get some.

Alright. I'm done with what can be perceived as self-reveling, even though it is not meant to be. The Freshman Orientation tap dance is over and the final act went as planned. I'm glad we set the tone I was looking for.
