Disappointed AND Relieved

Another late night, early morning entry.

Well, we walked away from the house we were going to buy. Scott and I were going to remove subjects on Monday, but we decided to go back for another full look on Sunday and got a surprise. As I said before, this place needed a LOT of renos. We had wondered why the carpets in the two spare rooms had been replaced and why the doors had been redone. Scott pulled up the heat vent in one of the bedrooms to see if there was hardwood under the carpets and found himself looking into the crawlspace. Very bad. There was no vent pipe. When he put his hand down to see if it had fallen or something, he found that it had been cut off and taped over. Same thing in the other bedroom. So, on went the overalls, out came the flashlight and into the crawlspace he crawled. Sure enough, he found that a hole had been cut into the chimney and the vent pipe fed through and up the chimney. The electrical had also been fooled around with and the plumbing had been tampered with so badly that there was a leak that rotted out the floorboards and trusses under the bathroom. Yes, you guessed it. It was a former grow-op. We figure that they grew pot in two of the bedrooms, the crawlspace and the attic.

We've looked at several houses and have seen a few that are very obviously grow-ops, hooks in the ceilings, mold everywhere, etc. You notice it the moment you step into the house. This one had us fooled. It was very well disguised.

If we had an unlimited budget, we may have stuck with it, but as it's only an investment property and we have no idea what we'd be getting into - possible moisture/mold/rot problems, not to mention having to fix the venting, electrical and plumbing, we felt it best just to walk away. We're happy with the decision. Happy, disappointed and relieved all at once. Interesting combo!

Let's see. Other then the "House Hunting Chronicles", I've been super busy with work and helping family. I spent most of today and yesterday helping my mom reorganize her den/office. She has what I call "organized clutter". Meaning, she has a lot of useless stuff neatly put away in boxes. There's little to no order, however. Yesterday we purged and today I organized and set up a filing system and put away everything. I should be a Professional Organizer! Wait a minute, I'm trying to become one. LOL. It was fun but exhausting! Hmm. I'm more blabby then I thought I'd be. Better save some things to say for tomorrow.
