Two Steps Back, Part 2, 1/?

LJ only lets me paste plain text now, and I got bored, so half the italics aren't here. If you want the easy read version, check ff.net on Friday. Alternatively, check it out here. Will put it on IJ later, when I can be bothered with formatting as cross-posting refuses to co-operate with this size post.

Lord, but Uchiha Sasuke has a problem with the concept of fighting in a unit in any incarnation. Boy just had to rush ahead without consulting his teammates, didn't he? It was fun watching him be completely scandalized by Naruto and Sakura's antics, too. Poor little chickadee, hasn't realized that the straightforward route isn't always the best, yet. Plus, nobody really cares how you accomplish a mission so long as you do...

I loved the changes! Of course Naruto's first instinct would be to gather intel! It goes without saying Kakashi would find out and exploit it! Naturally they'd get the other two by completely nonconventional means! On a related note, Neji and Tenten are going to kill Naruto dead. Bet Kenshin's going to be amused when he finds out, though. Even so, I'm glad they didn't get the last bell. I don't care how good they are for genin fresh out of academy, or how much potential any of them have. Chances of them beating a jounin are very, very slim.

Naruto's got Kakashi curious, huh? Now that's going to be a merry chase ( ... )

I can't really imagine him being particularly good at team work before he gets it beaten into his head, however he's raised - and I can't really imagine the Uchiha in general caring to beat it into his head.

I did think very, very briefly about having them beat Kakashi, but that would just make them ridiculously over-powered. If you put Kakashi at an even level with Zabuza, team 7 were all but useless in facing him in canon. Sure, they managed to get him to move, but that was about it - three genin beating a jounin seems a bit of an overstatement in my opinion ( ... )

...Oh, please have someone actually sing 'classified' at him. Please oh please! It'd make my month! XD

I love Sasuke, to be honest. At least, I like him as a character (I've always found his particular mix of trauma interesting, and Kishimoto did a fairly good job of making his responses consistent with that trauma until fairly recently). I'm pretty sure I'd really dislike him I met him in person, though. ^^;;

I suppose Kenshin's reaction will depend on whether he's managed to grow up any over the past few years. So far he seems to have done a good job of not being an asshat about Sasuke: he's just avoided him. I suppose the adult thing to do, once he is no longer able to avoid him, would be to be as polite as possible without actually telling him anything. As opposed to lashing out due to guilt he's projected onto someone who's essentially innocent. Um. Or at least, not slapping down the boy who his son is going to have to work with on a daily basis?

...I might be being a tad too optimistic, huh? ^^;;

Maybe a tad. =) I dunno, I think he'll try to be coldly polite, but I suspect mini-Sasuke's going to be a nosy little brat with that prodigy determination to get all information possible. This may cause problems.

As to the classified moment...

“Classified!” Genma sang happily, before pausing. “Man, I have been waiting so long to say that to you.”
“Funny,” Kakashi said dryly. “Now, if we could be serious…?”
Genma sniggered. “What’s funny is that you think I’m not being serious.”
“Genma,” Kakashi said, irritated. “He’s on my team. It’s a security risk if I don’t know my students’ full capabilities.”
Genma blinked. “You passed them? Seriously? Naruto was given to you because they thought it was pretty certain you were going to fail him.”
“They wanted him to fail?” Kakashi asked, intrigued despite himself. “Because of the…?”
“Classified!” Genma sang in the exact same tones as he had before. “That is never going to get old,” he said with glee after a moment, watching Kakashi’s eyebrow twitch a minute amount.

...This anon is now very curious. I'm pretty sure I know how Naruto knew stuff, but why wouldn't they want him to pass -- is it the Kyuubi, or his special ability, or his father, or what? And by putting Sasuke on a team they thought was going to fail, were they insulting the Uchiha clan?
