ok so no that i remember what i was actually going to discuss, now is the time to discuss it.
this week was my first week back to class/the first week of the semester and while i sat in many a classroom, i realized how awkward/weird the first day or week of classes are. here you are sitting in a room with people you obviously share some common interest with (unless its a gen ed class) and yet when we arrive ten minutes early to class we all sit in silence not talking to anyone and fiddling with our cellphones, staring out the window/at each other, and make judgements without giving anyone a chance to prove who they are.
when i try to think back to last semester, the only reson people talked to each other in the two classes that people actually did was because someone had the gusto to start a conversation with someone else and others joined in/encouraged others to do the same. for my one class it was because we all go there so early that there was no way we could all sit in silence for twenty minutes and it didnt hurt that some of the people in the class already knew each other. so essentially, if we have a bunch of introverts in a class, especially a lecture when there are few opportunities to talk to someone, then it ends up being the worst class in the world.
this came up in one of my class this week, that our generation spends the most time alone than any other generation before it. we are either plugged into our computers or television to such an extent that there are fewer of us that are socially adequate and outgoing, and i think thats part of the reason that there arent people that talk in my class. there are some exceptions, at least in my english class where we actually discuss topics and it pushes us to talk to one anohter. but in a basic video class where we watch videos and listen to a lecture, conversation doesnt happen so much. not to mention that its a class of 19 guys and 2 girls.
regardless, i know that if there was someone intriguing enough to talk to, id talk to them. yeah, thats sort of saying that it base it on looks but not entriely, especially if they speak up in class, grabbing my attention. in my classes last semester, thats how it went. we had a bit of a discussion and i thought a few of the people, luckily around me, were pretty interesting so we talked and then were split into groups so we got to go out together and talk and do a little project and it really helped me get over the anxiety of a new school/new class. so, hopefully something like that will happen this semester, though its looking like everythings individual with the exception of some class discussions, so ill have to speak up.
everyone should speak up.
