[quotethis_muses] nothing left to see here in this lonely place

Did they live happily ever after? They did not. No one ever does, in spite of what the stories may say. They had their good days, as you do, and they had their bad days, and you know about those. They had their victories, as you do, and they had their defeats, and you know about those, too. There were times when they felt ashamed of themselves, knowing they had not done their best, and there were times when they knew they had stood where their God had meant them to stand. All I'm trying to say is that they lived as well as they could. -- Stephen King (The Eye of the Dragon)

Dean Winchester was not a noble kind of guy. He was stupidly sacrificing according to his brother and his girl and bobby and just about anyone else who got wind of what he'd done. Some people understood and some people didn't. He was tired of explaining things to everyone. Everyone put their two sense in and really he didn't give a damn about anyone's opinions except maybe Sam's and Jo's but it's not like their opinions really changed anything. He just often got called a jerk and was hit in the face by his lovely girlfriend.

Two ships passing in the night; that's what he and Jo were. When they were together they fought all the damn time. She asked him what new girls he'd flirted with and then go behind his back to get cosy with his brother. By cosy, Dean means that they try to get him out of his deal. Try to beat a dead horse. There was nothing left for them to do except let him die and really he worried that they'd end up hooking up after he was gone. Grief and all that. And so he's not so self-sacrificing cause he'd really rather Jo never move on from him. He wants to be the only one in her heart (and bed for that matter) so how noble is that shit? Not noble at all. He's not a noble guy remember. He's just a guy who wins some and looses others and he has to watch his brother mack on a demon chick; who is admittedly not hard on the eyes and all but even so.

He likes having Sam walk in and groan, walk back out because he doesn't want to see or here the things that Dean and Jo do together. And he's only got a couple months left so he's really trying to get all the time in with Jo that he can. Between their jobs taking them to opposite ends of the country (cause let's face it they do not work well together, he's always worried about her and she's always trying to play hero) and the ammount of fighting that they do; he's not really getting all the face time he wants. But hey, he loves the girl so he does what he cans.

It won't be a happily ever after and there are moments when he wishes that they all had simple lives. That Sam lived ever after with Jess or even Madison and that he could settle down with Jo. But that's just not the way life is. He's living as best he can though; living is what's important. Or at least that's what he tells himself.
