Conceding to my mother

When I was young, I used to love rearranging my bedroom furniture.  I would do it two or three or four times a year, depending on how patient my mother was feeling on the day I chose to do it.  I always wanted to simply move the furniture into different places, but she always insisted that I clean EVERYTHING, with soap and water, even the baseboards, and I hated doing that part.  I just wanted my room to look different and I didn't care much about the fact that moving everything would unearth months of dust bunnies.   But, until I was old enough to actually move the furniture alone, I had to go by her rules.  So, clean I must.

Now, I'm living on my own, married, nearly thirty (eek!) and I still like to move furniture around on occasion.  It makes things feel fresh. Especially at the turn of the season.  For instance, this weekend, Calvin and I renovated the office.  We weren't really planning on changing the furniture around in the room, but when it came time to put everything back (after changing the flooring and painting the walls), Calvin said, "Do you want to put stuff differently?"  And, of course, my younger self came out and said, "Yes, definitely, if we can".  So, I spent most of Monday cleaning furniture (yes, with soap and water), just like my mother showed me, and attempting to reorganize the office space.  This was much easier said than done, because our office has been exactly the same since the day we moved into this house, back in September 2005.  Everything had its place and because of electrical outlet placement, it wasn't that easy to figure out a new layout.  But, I managed.  Calvin's desk had to stay at the same spot because it's too big to fit any other way.  I put the small bookshelf where the big one used to be and now it belongs entirely to Calvin (all his books and albums are on it, and his trains decorate the top), though I kept the bottom shelf for toys and books for Zoey and Tanner when they visit.  The big book shelf is now where my desk used to be and is full of MY books and photo albums (though Calvin's cars decorate the top).  My desk is where the big book shelf used to be.  This is the biggest change for me since now I am facing a different wall, can look into the office as opposed to nothing and have my back to Calvin's desk whereas I used to be beside it.  I like it, so far, but it's going to take a bit of getting used to.

Somethings never change.  I guess I will always like rearranging furniture.  However, I have to concede that my mother was right about the furniture cleaning thing.  Dust bunnies are kind of creepy.
