i. the night class
It’s cold.
There’s white everywhere.
It’s snowing.
Snow… Snow is supposed to be beautiful, pure and white.
But why… Why is it so red?
“Kyuhyun-”
Kyuhyun opened his eyes slowly, as if knowing that he had arrived to his destination. The taxi stopped into a halt and the driver turned towards him with a friendly smile, “We’re here, boy.”
Kyuhyun smiled back at the older male before his smile fell slightly as he turned his head towards the large old building.
Park Academy.
He unconsciously clenched his hand, I’m here.
--
“Oh, he’s here already?” the older male exclaimed, looking up from the papers on his large desk. His assistant nodded and bowed a bit, “He’s outside. Do you want me to call him?”
“Oh, yes. Yes, of course,” he said, standing up right away. He watched as his assistant bowed at him and exited the room. He lets out a sigh as he peeled off his glasses that were resting on the bridge of his nose. His attention was brought back to reality when he heard the sound of the door opened and closed back.
His eyes widened at the tall male in front of him.
“K-Kyu…hyun?”
The younger one smiled, not friendly like before, just business-like, “Hello, Jungsu hy-” He shut his lips and Jungsu tensed for a moment. Kyuhyun then lets out a soft sigh and regaining his composure, “...Chairman Park.”
Jungsu had to hold back the disappointed frown that started to creep on his face by forcing out a stiff smile, “Hello, Kyuhyun. Please, take a seat.” He motioned the younger one to sit on the leather couch situated in his room. He walked towards the couch, his mind scramble trying to figure out how he should talk to the younger male now.
Because this Kyuhyun isn’t the Kyuhyun he used to know.
The Kyuhyun before was friendly, witty, snarky and cute all in the same time. He would run towards Jungsu if the older male came to visit him with a cheerful, “Jungsu hyung!!” Carefree laughter always erupted from his throat before, sounding like a beautiful music to Jungsu’s ears.
And they all remained as memories to him now.
Jungsu’s memories of a laughing Kyuhyun were cut off when the younger male sat on the couch near him. He studied Kyuhyun; the younger one had grown so tall and defined. Maybe not muscular, but his body language showed that Kyuhyun is not a weak, innocent young male he had known before. He’s a grown 16-years-old teenager, his face had matured a bit and even though there’s a bit of childishness in his features, the young male had it hidden behind his mask of maturity.
“How’s the trip here?” Jungsu started, offering a friendly smile. Hoping, always hoping, that maybe, just maybe, Kyuhyun would turn to his old-self back. Even just for a moment. Even it’s just for Jungsu.
“It’s fine, I guess,” came the monotone reply and Jungsu’s heart fell.
He bit his lips, not knowing what to say anymore, until he heard Kyuhyun speaks.
“If there’s nothing you want to tell me, I think I’ll go to my room. Your assistant, Youngwoon-ssi had given me the key to my room and a map for me,” Kyuhyun’s expression was blank and Jungsu could only watched helplessly as Kyuhyun stood up and bowed stiffly to him before making his way out of the room.
It’s now or never, Jungsu…
“Wait! Kyuhyun, wait!” he said a bit too loud and Kyuhyun stopped, hand already gripping the doorknob. The younger male turned towards him, his brows arched in confusion; the first emotion he’d finally showed. Jungsu was standing a few feet from him, fiddling his fingers.
“What is it, Chairman Park?”
Jungsu took a deep breath as his eyes were closed before he opened them again to give a disappointed look to Kyuhyun, “Please don’t call me that.”
Kyuhyun blinked, “Call you what?”
“Chairman Park,” and Kyuhyun was clearly taken aback but Jungsu continued, “I know, it’s hard. But I really wished that you would be the same Kyuhyun again.”
“I can’t,” Kyuhyun cuts him, voice still controlled but there’s something dance around his face. Pain? Agony?
“You know I can’t…” his voice trailed off and Kyuhyun closed his eyes briefly before turning to exit the room. Jungsu’s voice rang into his hearing as he opened the door.
“I wish you could call me ‘hyung’ like always, Kyuhyun-ah.”
Kyuhyun’s hand almost slipped off the knob at the friendly term the older male used to him, but he quickly regained his composure. He stilled, not knowing why he still hadn’t exited the room and Jungsu took this to continue.
“It’s okay if…if you don’t want to call me that in public. But… I hope that you’ll call me ‘hyung’ when we’re alone.”
Kyuhyun closed his eyes before opening them again. Jungsu stopped the disappointed sigh that almost rolls out of his mouth when Kyuhyun stayed silent while opening the door. When he was about to turn to go back to his work earlier, he was stopped when Kyuhyun spoke, a small smirk on his handsome face,
“Only when we’re alone, Jungsu hyung.”
--
The sun dropped lower to the horizon. It’s dusk.
It’s time.
Kyuhyun opened his eyes when he heard students’ chatter. He pushed himself from the wall he was leaning at and walked towards where the students at. He ignored the curious eyes that were looking at him and also the whispers coming from them, ‘Is he new?’ He walked a few steps, until he stopped in the middle of the students.
“My name is Cho Kyuhyun,” he started, earning attentions from all the students in an instant. “I’ll be the school’s prefect starting from today onwards.” He stopped, letting the students absorbing his info.
“I’m the Day Class student,” he ignored the shocked gasp coming from some of them, “And I hope all of you will give me a full cooperation so that I can fulfill my duty without a hitch.” He looked at all the students and smiled briefly after seeing them nodding at him with a smile.
CLICK!
Kyuhyun turned his head towards the gate of the Moon Dormitory, belonged to the Night Class students. He gets into position, ordering the Day Class students to get back to their dorm, which was obeyed by them instantly.
Well, that was easy, he thought, amused.
He then turned his attention to the Night Class students after seeing some (most) Day Class students blushing or maybe whispering towards them. He understood now, why they were captivated by Night Class students.
It was because Night Class is an elite group of students, and they are all completely gorgeous.
One of the Night Class students noticed him and Kyuhyun frowned seeing the smirk on the male student’s face. Before he could react, the male student was suddenly in front of him, his smirk widened. Kyuhyun quickly gets into a defense position, spreading his arms out to protect the Day Class students.
“Can I help you?” he asked, locking eyes with the male’s darker orbs that were slowly turning red.
Vampire.
“You’re a new one, eh?” he said, ignoring Kyuhyun’s question and stepped closer to the prefect.
Kyuhyun placed his palm on the male’s chest, blocking him from moving any further. He gritted his teeth, already disgusted with the scent coming from the Vampire. “Please get to your class now.”
However, the male didn’t budge and tried to close the distance between him and Kyuhyun despite the resistance he got from the prefect, “Oh, you’re a strong one. Even though you’re only a Human. What’s your name, cutie?”
Kyuhyun’s frown deepened as he saw the fangs coming from the Night Class student’s mouth. He gripped the Vampire’s school uniform with the hand placed on the chest, already pissed off by his attitude.
I see now where the problem is.
“Class is starting. I suggest you’d better be gone now,” he said in low voice, glaring at the Vampire. The Vampire seemed surprise at first but soon he smirked and backed off from Kyuhyun but still didn’t budge from there.
Kyuhyun cautiously eyed him, wondering what the Vampire intend to do.
To his surprise, the Vampire smiled brightly and waved, “Good evening, Day Class students. I hope you guys get a good sleep tonight as well!” The Day Class students behind Kyuhyun nodded and bid him a ‘good evening’ and Kyuhyun could feel the blush and smile from them.
The bright smile turned back into a smirk, and Kyuhyun get back into a defense position when the male’s face gets closer to him. His eyes flashed red as he whispered, “Since you guys got a new knight today, I bet you guys would get a good sleep.”
“Hyunseung, stop bothering the prefect,” Kyuhyun and the Vampire’s - Hyunseung - attentions snapped towards the voice belonged to a handsome looking male - no, Vampire - who seemed to be the head male of the Moon Dormitory.
Hyunseung pouted, “Aww~ Donghae hyung, I was just playing with the new ‘kitten’~” Kyuhyun’s glare hardened towards the Vampire upon hearing the sentence. However, the Vampire was not affected at all when he just grinned and walked towards his group with a, “You’re scaring me, Mr. Prefect.”
Kyuhyun stared at the group, annoyance all over his face. He didn’t expect having to deal with such troublesome student on his first day as the prefect, let alone someone from the Night Class. A Vampire.
His eyes then caught on the male who Hyunseung called ‘Donghae’, the head of male’s Moon Dormitory or possibly, all the Night Class students. He’s also looking at Kyuhyun, making the prefect felt even more uncomfortable and irritated all in the same time. He jumped a bit (not visibly, he wished) when the male gave him a playful smirk before walking towards the school.
The wind blew past him and Kyuhyun turned around, it’s time to get to work.

Ever since long ago, stretching back into the shadows of history, there has been a conflict between Humans and Vampires. In Korea, only a select number of people remember the past. But, the existence of Vampires is still a terrifying reality. That is why, the Chairman of Park Academy, Park Jungsu, decided to build a school where Humans and Vampires can get along well.
But of course, it’s like putting a lion and a lamb in one cage. It was hard, considering some of the Day Class students which are Humans, were terrified at the Night Class students who are the Vampires. And some Night Class students had tried to feed on the Day Class students. For three years, the Chairman had been trying all sorts of ways to make sure the two races can get along well. Finally, after three years of hard work, Chairman Park finally solved all the problems occurred during the times when the academy was first opened.
He chose the Day Class students only from those who knew about Vampires and are not afraid with them. He chose them from a family who knew about Vampires and are sharing the same pacifist idealism as the Chairman. He also did the same with the Night Class students but it’s a bit harder than dealing with the Day Class students since the Vampires who shared the same pacifist idealism are the ones from the higher classes in the Vampires society; the royal blood and the nobles.
Even so, there were still some problems dealing with the Night Class and Day Class students. Some Day Class students tend to take the risk by going to the Moon Dormitory belonged to the Night Class students to either give a love letter or presents or maybe to get a glimpse on the Night Class’s life. And from the Night Class, some of them are too ‘playful’ and tried to feed on the willing Day Class students, which could jeopardize the Chairman’s pacifist idealism.
And that’s where Kyuhyun came in need.
“I just can’t understand that old man…” Kyuhyun muttered as he looked up to the dark sky. He sighed and turned to continue his patrol, when he was stopped by an unknown male.
“Who are you?” Kyuhyun asked, alarmed. He eyed the male, trying to make out if he’s the Night Class or Day Class or worst…an outsider.
The male however, not affected by his stern voice and glare, only smiled warmly at him, “Hi, my name is Kim Minseok. I’m the head of male’s Sun Dormitory.” Kyuhyun relaxed visibly and he chuckled, “You’re a new student right? Cho… Kyuhyun, am I right?”
“Yes,” he answered, shaking Minseok’s extended hand. “What are you doing out so late?” Kyuhyun asked as he eyed the head male. He was not wearing the school uniform (which is obviously why), only a long-sleeved white shirt with green stripes and black pants.
Minseok chuckled, “I’m just finishing checking if the male students were already asleep and I saw you here. It felt wrong you know, for a head dorm to not knowing the new student’s name,” the male shrugged.
Kyuhyun stretched a small smiled and nodded his head lightly, “I see.”
“So, how is it going? Is it hard?”
Kyuhyun took a deep breath as he eyed the school’s building, “Not bad for the first day, I guess.”
The head male chuckled, “Sorry about Hyunseung hyung earlier. He’s a bit….active.”
“Is he always like that?” Kyuhyun asked, looking at the head male, ignoring the curious question on why Minseok was addressing the Vampire as ‘hyung’.
“Yeah, pretty much. The previous prefects also had trouble handling him.”
Kyuhyun went confused, “Previous prefects?”
“Yep, there were prefects before you. Most of them were actually from Night Class but were expelled because of…some problems. But there was one prefect from Day Class like you and he’s the last one. When was it… 5 years ago, if I’m not mistaken…” Sehun pursed his lips in thought, “Yeah, I’m right. 5 years ago.”
“Who was it?” Kyuhyun asked and he was met with silence as Minseok scratched the back of his head awkwardly. His eyes widened in realization, “It was you?”
Minseok laughed awkwardly, “Yeah, it’s me.”
“What happened?” and Kyuhyun’s eyes noticed how Minseok unconsciously held his right arm protectively, “….Just something.”
Understood by the situation, Kyuhyun nodded before he excused himself, “I need to go on patrol. You’d better go inside, it’s cold.”
The head male nodded and waved at him with a smile, “I will.”
--
“I didn’t know there were other prefects before me.”
Jungsu looked at the male student who was sitting on the window frame, facing the Chairman with an unreadable look over his shoulder. The older male sighed as he finished making his tea and walked towards Kyuhyun, sipping the hot tea as he gazed at the dark sky, stars glimmering across the sky.
“You didn’t ask,” he answered simply and he smiled at the look Kyuhyun gave him.
“Well, I need to make sure my students are safe you know. I can’t ask an adult to guard my students because that will make them felt uncomfortable. Also…” he sipped his tea slowly, “If anything were to happen, it will be troublesome for my students.”
Kyuhyun stayed silent. He followed the Chairman’s gaze, “How long have these students been here?” he asked, wondering why Minseok called Hyunseung ‘hyung’ as if they had known each other for so long and the fact that Minseok was the prefect 5 years ago.
The Chairman hummed, “I’m not really sure. Some of the Night Class students, like the head male, Lee Donghae-”
Lee Donghae.
“-had been in this school from the first year it was opened. With his other friends. A few Day Class students too-”
Minseok.
“-But most of them had been here three years after this school was opened. You know, after I stabilized the conditions of this school. I took them since they were in middle school so that they could get along even well, and it kinda works.”
That explained everything….
“So… everyone here had known each other since middle school?”
“Yep,” the Chairman answered and smiled at Kyuhyun, “You’re the only new student here, you know.”
The younger male scoffed, “Whatever.” He pursed his lips, “Oh, I just remembered. About the last prefect from Day Class, what happened to him?”
“Minseok?” Jungsu asked and Kyuhyun nodded. “Oh… He… He was 11 during that time. He was on patrol when two Day Class students wandered around the school after curfew. When he tried to bring them back to their dorm, three Night Class students were passing by. And….” Jungsu sighed, “One of them smelled Minseok’s blood - he got a paper cut earlier - and…attacked him. Thank God, the other two Night Class students helped him by grabbing the Night Class student to prevent him from attacking Minseok even further. The Day Class students then informed me about that and…that’s that.”
“Was he badly injured?” Kyuhyun asked, remembering how Minseok held his right arm earlier.
“Well… He was bleeding pretty badly that the Night Class became chaotic. It left him with multiple scars on his right hand.”
That’s why he was wearing a long-sleeved shirt.
Kyuhyun nodded in understanding fashion, “Then, what about prefects before Minseok?”
“There’s none actually,” Kyuhyun arched his brows. “Minseok was the first one and the last Day Class student to become a prefect. After him, I chose someone from the Night Class because they were….stronger and also the fact that most problems occurred because of the Night Class students itself. But…” Jungsu sighed, “…You know we can’t expect a Vampire to suppress their thirst for blood.”
“What happened to the Night Class students who attack the Day Class students?”
“If it was serious, then they will be expelled instantly. But if it’s a minor case, we gave them a chance, but it also depends on the attacked students. If they forgive their attacker, we’ll give them a chance, but if not, then, we have to expel them.”
Kyuhyun nodded again, satisfied with the info the Chairman had given him. However, Jungsu knew there was something bothering the younger male and he knew what was it, “I know… You didn’t believe that the members of the Night Class are pacifists, Kyuhyun-ah… But, you have to trust me this time.”
The prefect stared at the dark ground below him, letting the wind blew passed his hair, “No matter what you said, Jungsu hyung… I will never believe it… And there’s no way, I will let my guard down around them.”
Jungsu stayed silent as Kyuhyun stood up from the window, “You have to know that the reason why they looked like Humans is so that they can hunt us down more efficiently,” Kyuhyun turned his head towards the Chairman and Jungsu could see the hatred in those eyes. He nodded when Kyuhyun said he’ll be going on patrol, watching as the prefect jumped off the ledge and landed on to the ground perfectly.
“I understand you, Kyuhyun-ah…” Jungsu spoke quietly to the dark sky, “I understand that not all Vampires are good and kind. But you also have to understand me.”
I have to break the dark cycle of hatred that haunts the relationship between Vampires and Humans.
--
The first time he sensed the male’s scent, he was tingling with excitement.
The first time he saw the male, he was twitching in hunger.
The first time he heard the male’s velvety voice, he couldn’t suppress the smile of hunger that crept on his lips.
The first time he saw the glare coming from the male’s chocolate brown eyes, he felt the beast inside him growling.
“We, here in the Night Class are the first of our kind in this world to test this newly developed blood tablets. Not only that we’re the pride of this school, we’re also the pride of the entire Vampire race,” the Night Class teacher, Kim Jaejoong, said.
“Somehow I really doubt that,” came the playful reply from Jessica Jung, the female student from the Night Class, a smirk plastered on her beautiful face.
“Yeah, we’re just a study group, anyway,” Ryeowook agreed with the same smirk.
“I don’t know about that,” another female student - Tiffany - spoke out, “After all, co-existing with Humans like this is a huge step forward. Right? Donghae.”
The said male, Lee Donghae, chuckled, stopping his mind from going back to the new Day Class prefect from before. He flipped another page of his book, “That’s right. After all, we have the Chairman to thank for everything that we’ve learned here.”
The whole class chuckled lowly after hearing Donghae’s words, murmurs of agreement resonated through the class.
“What do you think about that new prefect, Donghae?” Yunho, one of his childhood friends, asked, amusement dancing in his eyes.
Donghae hummed in reply and shrugged, “I think he’s fine.”
One of the students, Luhan, snorted, “Still uptight as ever, aren’t you?”
Donghae smirked thinly at this and the members of Night Class knew it’s the end of their conversation. Mr. Kim resumed his teaching and Donghae let his mind wanders to the new school prefect.
Cho…Kyuhyun…
