In which I have grumbly thoughts and come off as arrogant and self-involved. But I'm so sick of people thumbing their nose up at anything that isn't Steve/Danny.
Thank you, Iby, for saying all these things. I tend to get very rage-y when people complain about Danny (or Steve, but I don't think that happens hardly at all) not being in the episode right away.
At the core the show is Steve/Danny. There are obviously a lot of other relationships and dynamics which I love, and I also love the Steve/Danny too, but people tend to forget that there are two other team members. When the show focuses on the others it's not going "down the drain" and I'd really like to get my hands on whoever says that shit. That's the problem I think a lot of shippers have; they're so focused on their ship that anything that gets in the way is ~oh so terrible. GIVE ME A BREAK! A lot of the same people say how they love the ohana aspect of the show. Well, how can you love the ohana aspect of the show when 2 characters tend to get considerably less screen time than the others and then complain when they finally do get more screen time because it cuts down on Steve/Danny? Sometimes people just make no sense.
As a big Steve/Kono shipper I was obviously thrilled with the opening. Either you or someone else pointed out that there are episodes where Kono and/or Chin aren't in it for way longer than the first 11 minutes, and yet many of those people have no problem with them not being in it right away. I was so excited about it because Steve/Kono rarely get their moments, so when they do get one I get all flail-y, and I try my best not to let people ruin my excitement. :D
I don't really know what I was trying to get across with this comment, but I must say that I respect you and the way you voice your opinions so much because you do it in a way that is respectful towards everyone. You also understand the wide range of things that this show has to offer and you appreciate all the things we get to see. It doesn't make you ship your ship any less when Steve/Danny isn't at the center of each episode, or say that the show is awful because of that. A loooooot of people could stand to take a page out of your book, so thank you for that!
Lenkov et al has stated that the core of the show rests upon the relationship between Steve and Danny. (I don't necessarily think that's a great thing). But Steve and Cath could get married and have lots of gorgeous chubby children, and the central force behind the show would still be the relationship between Steve and Danny. We really don't need to be so defensive of Steve/Danny, because it's always going to be there, no matter what happens.
And exactly! People say they want "just the core four!" (Which, I object to in general, because hello - as a show grows, there are going to be more characters. That is the way it works, that is life).
But then when we do have lots of Chin and Kono time, people get sulky. Although I will readily confess that at the same time, the opposite is also true: I am seeing more calls for Kono and Chin, which is wonderful.
Because the truth of it is, they are used far less than Steve and Danny. (Although I've brought up this idea to a few people: imo, Danny has less than he seems. He gets wrapped up in Steve's story and emotions, shares Steve's screen-time. But hardcore Danny-centric stuff is less than it looks). But even so, the others *still* have less than him. In 305, Chin and Kono were reduced to little more than purveyors of info and addresses to the boys, so there's no denying that they have less screentime. (Btw: don't know if you heard, but there are some AMAZING Chin spoilers that have just come out).
That's extremely kind of you! I actually thought I came across as too cross and aggressive in this post, because I was really riled up yesterday, so I'm pleased it sounds okay. :D
You're probably off vacationing by now, so I hope you have lots of fun! :D
