So, tomorrow is my grandpa's 80th birthday party. All I can think is that it means he's going to die soon, which makes me tear up just thinking about it.
My mom and I went shopping to buy some party supplies. She wanted to get lots of things with 80 on it (balloons, napkins, so on). There were lots of 40, 50, and 60 supplies, but after that things were hard to find, and several times my mom wondered aloud why that was. What I was thinking but didn't say was, "Most people are dead at his age. They don't need party supplies."
In a month, I get a two week break from school. My mom and her siblings have collected many stories from my grandpa over the years, especially stories from WWII (he was a forward scout in Europe, fought in the battle of the bulge, and has a purple heart). Anyway, I have volunteered to type and bind these stories into a kind of narrative of his life during that break. I think it would be something amazing for him to have, but I also think it would be amazing for his children and grandchildren to have. I see it kind of as my/our tribute to him.
Happy Birthday, Grandpa.
