Juror #10

I have a new name this week: Juror #10. I was selected for jury duty this morning for a criminal trial that started today. Truly, I can't say anything about the trial itself, but the juror selection process was not unlike a John Grisham novel. Names are put in a drum and selected at random. Then, assuming that the potential juror has no personal issues (I know someone involved in the case; my business will go under without me; I have some other excuse that I hope will work), the crown and the prosecution can say 'content' or 'challenge' to the potential juror. If both are content, you become a juror. If either one challenges, you get to sit back down. They chose juries for 2 cases today, the first was for a hooligan-looking guy, probably early/mid 20s, who had robbed some lady. Basically, if you were a teacher, a nurse, or a senior, it was pretty much guaranteed that you would be challenged. The jury that I am on has 9 men, 3 women. I'm the youngest, by probably at least 5 years.

They treat us pretty well there too, always having water, tea, coffee, cookies, even hot chocolate ready for us. They bring in lunch on the last day apparently, until then we fend for ourselves. I walked to the market today, great place to eat.

For the record, TRIALS ARE EXCEEDINGLY BORING. Don't go unless you really need to. They entered about 40 photos into evidence, which took almost 45 minutes! I nearly nodded off and I felt really bad about that.

Elle Woods would not succeed in our Superior court system. The lawyers wear black robes...and I highly doubt they would allow for pink robes.

The best news is that jury duty is my 'job' for the week, and I won't be working at TD. Yet I'm still going to be paid :D
Doing my civic duty sure feels good.
