wasn't a huge fan of his music but I have so much respect for him as a guitarist, and The Great Southern Trendkill is a bad ass CD..

Dimebag was killed while playing a gig in Columbus, Ohio with his band Damage Plan when someone jumped out of the crowd right after they began their set and shot him [and other band members] multiple times
Nothings been 100% confirmed yet, so I'm not quite sure all the details but check out the 'full' story here
and if that werent bad enough today is the 24 year anniversary of the death of one of the greatest artists of all time..
