Summary: In which Fred has to make an awkward phone call.
Author’s Note: Related to the Angelus/Ruby piece I just wrote. And I’m determined to ship Sam with every Buffy girl in existence. I’m timelining this as S6ish of Supernatural and S4ish of Angel, but minus the butchering of Cordelia.

She wasn’t sure whether or not she should pick up the phone. It was a long shot that he would actually be able to help. Or that he hadn’t changed his number. Or that he was even still alive. In the kind of line work he was in, it was hard to say whether or not the guy she hadn’t seen in six years would still be there to pick up the phone, but … she knew that she at least had to try. That what had just happened was so far beyond their pay grade. Especially considering that his name was the one painted on the walls.
There was another moment of hesitation, before she picked up the handset and dialed the number. She was surprised she remembered it as well as she did, but some things-they were just like riding the bike. Maybe it was just because she called them so many times. The muscle memory was there. She then waited for the phone to ring.
And ring.
And ring.
And ri-
“Hello?”
For a moment, she didn’t know what to say. It was weird enough just having him on the other end of the line, let alone having to bring this to his attention. There was a long pause, and she could hear the intake of breath that came with being about to repeat the question, before she spoke up. “Hi. Sam. It’s uh-”
“Fred?”
“Yes!” The fact that he remembered her brightened her tone almost instantly. “I-I know this is a little out of the blue, but I-I think I need your help.”
“Uh-sure. Of course. Where are you?”
“Los Angeles.” She rambled off the address of the Hyperion before continuing. “I’m sorry to just call like this, but uh-it’s a demon, and you … you were requested.”
“I was what?”
“Hold on.” She turned slowly, taking a picture of the blood stains on the wall, and sending it to him. She waited for it to send, before Sam’s voice came back on the line. But it wasn’t Sam’s voice. It was cold and hard, and she wasn’t sure she liked it, but she tried to listen to the words and not the tone.
“Salt all the doors and windows. We’re heading out now.”
“Sam?”
“Just-trust me on this, okay? I’ll be there as soon as I can.”
“Okay.” There was a beat. “I missed you.”
He paused, and the soft ‘Sam’ tone returned. The tone that she loved, like warm velvet. “I missed you too.”
“I’ll see you soon?”
“I’ll see you soon, Fred.”
