Content Warning: Spoilers for Season 5.
Summary: The past month had probably been the best month of Dean’s life.
Author’s Note: Based on an AU I’m writing with lollobrigida where the badness in 510 didn’t happen and Jo and Dean recently got married. I wasn’t originally going to use a lot of RP for this, but Dean wouldn’t let go of the prompt and it was pretty appropriate.
Disclaimer: I do not own. They belong to Kripke. I’m just borrowing and am treating them better than he did.

The past month had probably been the best month of Dean’s life.

Dean had never really had much going for him. It was basically Sam, and that was it. There was never anything he had purely for himself. It was always him doing what needed to be done for other people, sacrificing for other people. Ever since Carthrage though, he found that he had something that was his, something he didn’t have to give up in order to get where he needed to go. Jo was always there when he came home with their house and their dogs. It was the closest that Dean had ever had to having something normal, and if anyone ever tried to ruin it for them, he would end them faster than they could blink.

He needed to be sure that this would be there for him when it was over. If he was going to have to watch Sam jump into Hell, he needed to know that there would be someone there to catch him this time. Regardless of logic, regardless of anything really-there was no way he was going to be able to just let Sam go. This was his brother. He needed someone to tell him when to stop. In the way everyone least expected, that person happened to be five-four, blond, and throw a hell of a punch.

The honeymoon was only supposed to last for a week. He and Jo would get to spend some time together and then Dean and Sam would go off and do what they had to do. But the longer he stayed, the longer he didn’t want to leave, until weeks were turning into a month. He was pretty sure Sam wasn’t complaining either-the more time he was allowed to spend with Anna, the better. They were both just losing themselves in a world where as far as they were concerned, the Apocalypse didn’t exist. Dean happened to like this world quite a bit.

At least, he did until Crowley showed up.

“What the hell are you doing here?”

He couldn’t get past the front door and both he and Dean knew it but there was something about the fact that he even had the audacity to show up at Jo’s that made Dean’s blood boil. Crowley just gave him an expectant look before shrugging.

“You left out where you wanted me to send your wedding present. I figured it might be best to deliver it in person.”

“Yeah, well-whatever you’re sellin’, we’re not buyin’.” He went to close the door, but Crowley pushed back. He couldn’t cross the threshold but he could definitely keep a door from closing if he didn’t want it to.

“In case you’ve forgotten, Lucifer isn’t exactly waiting for you to finish your honeymoon,” the demon snapped, giving Dean an even look. “There’s still an Apocalypse out there, and my head is still on the chopping block. Lest we not forget-I still have Bobby Singer’s soul. If I die before you complete your end of the deal-”

Mentioning that, Dean’s eyes narrowed, and if looks could kill Dean would see just what would happen if Crowley died before they were ready. “Oh, I remember.”

“Good. I’m glad it didn’t slip through the cracks in that Swiss cheese brain of yours.” Crowley gave him a glare before adjusting his coat and starting to head back down the stairs. “Get with the program, Dean. Or you’re going to have a very short lived marriage.”

Dean watched him head down the porch, and he knew the demon was right, as much as he didn’t want to admit it. He didn’t want to leave. He didn’t want to escape this little bubble that they had built themselves to ignore the rest of the world from, but now the world had invaded, and Dean had to go. He had to make sure that it didn’t happen again.

Jo had gone out to get some of the essentials that they had run out of in not leaving the house, and while she was gone, he talked to Sam. They made their plans to leave the next day, and now all he had to do was tell Jo, which was probably going to be harder than he thought it was going to be. And he already thought it was going to be pretty damn hard.

When she arrived home, he didn’t waste time. He caught her when she walked in the door, hands going around her waist to pull her in to a warm, soft kiss. She was surprised at first, letting the bags she was holding drop to the floor and sliding her arms around his shoulders. After that it was relatively easy to pick her up, let her legs settle around his waist and carry her off to the bedroom. That had been what they were doing all month, so there was no reason to change the pattern now.

As he settled her down on the bed under him, shifting to brace himself above her, she pulled from the kiss and gave him a concerned look. “You’re leaving, aren’t you?”

Dean paused, using one hand to smooth her hair away from her face before leaning in to kiss her again, just wanting to spend as much time with her as he could and not think about it anymore.

He didn’t sleep much that night, not that he expected he would. He just stayed there next to her while she slept, soaking in the feeling of her next to him as though he was trying to memorize it, just in case he never felt it again. He let his fingers trail down softly over her arm and back up again, staying right there next to her until he absolutely couldn’t. He knew that he had to meet Sam in an hour, and it was time to start moving.

He showered and got dressed, making sure that his bag was packed for the trip and doing all of it as silently as he possibly could-quite the feat when there were two dogs nosing at him for attention every chance he got. It wasn’t long before he was ready, and he moved to sit on the edge of the bed next to her, brushing her hair back away from her face again. He leaned forward, pressing a kiss to her forehead and prepared himself to say goodbye again. This time, hopefully, he would be coming back.

Though knowing his luck, he wasn’t sure how likely that was.
