Bela wasn’t used to having this many people in her space at one time.

She wasn’t used to having anyone in her space, actually. She had spent almost two years completely on her own, living off her savings and trying to keep her place as safe as possible. The less people she had inside it, the less risks there were and that was what she needed to stay safe. That was what she needed to stay alive.

Now, though, there were too many people. Everyone was too close and packed in, moving from one place to another with very little space between them, and it was too much. She was forced to explain again how she happened to be alive, which was never really a pleasant topic of conversation for anyone. She just wanted them all to leave her alone, but apparently right where she is was the safest place in New York City, and where everyone wanted to be. It was overwhelming, suffocating even, and she just wanted to be as far away from everyone else as possible. That’s why she all too quickly excused herself back to her room once everyone was settled, closed the door, and tried to remind herself how to breathe again.

Even before she went to Hell, she wasn’t used to being surrounded by people. People had never bothered to care about her before, beyond what they could get out of her. She never had friends, her family life was a mess-she became accustomed to doing things on her own. Through that, she started to treat people the same way they treated her-they were only as good as what they could do for her. Nothing more, nothing less. Now, though, there were people just there, all better than her, all working towards some kind of great destiny that she wasn’t supposed to be a part of. She was supposed to be dead, out of the picture. But now she was here and suddenly thrust into everything again and it was too much. It was so much she couldn’t breathe.

She closed the door to her bedroom behind her, sitting down on the edge of the bed and letting her eyes wander to the alarm clock sitting on the bed side table. The bright red numbers just stared at her, ticking away the minutes of the ten o’clock hour, and she was slowly able to drown out the rest of the noises coming from the front of her apartment. She just stayed there in silence, watching the minutes pass and staying focused by thinking about nothing at all until there was a knock on her door.

“Bela? You in there?”

She jumped at the sound, before shaking herself out of it and making her way towards the door. When she pulled it open, Dean was standing behind it, looking almost concerned. She straightened slightly, trying to read him for some kind of answer as to why he was here. “Yes?”

“You okay?” he asked. The question was a little awkward, given that this isn’t a conversation they had before, and there’s a beat before he continues. “You just … sorta disappeared.”

“I’m fine,” she said quickly, hoping that it would get rid of him. “I was just going to get ready for bed.”

“Oh.” His hands slid into his pockets, and he shifted awkwardly for a moment, before he spoke again. “Look, can I, uh-talk to you about something? In private?”

She was hesitant at first-being alone with Dean was not something that was on her to-do list today-but she agreed in the end, stepping to the side to let him in. He made his way into her room, letting her close the door behind him, but giving her enough space so that she wasn’t even in reaching distance. She appreciated that gesture, more than anything else he could probably say, because he at least understood why she was uncomfortable around him. Small steps-they won’t get you far, but at least they’re headed in the right direction.

“Well?” she asked after a moment of silence, still wanting him to get to the point. “What is it?”

“I, uh-” he swallowed hard. “I’m sorry. About-down there.” Her head tipped to the side a bit at the apology, not quite sure as to where it was coming from. He made a small frustrated noise, before continuing. “I remember, alright? Every face, every soul-I remember.”

“Oh.”

Her arms wrapped around herself more tightly, closing her eyes as she tried to process how to handle this. She wasn’t sure if she could forgive him for what he had done, but at least the apology was there. He wasn’t dismissing it as just a result of his surroundings, however. He was taking responsibility and that was far more than she had expected.

“Look, I know I said a lot of shit before we died, but-I never actually meant any of it. You didn’t deserve that. Not from me.”

“Thank you,” she said softly, before looking up to meet his eyes again. “Is there anything else?”

She wasn’t sure what he was expecting, but from the look on his face, it seemed to be better at least. He nodded before starting to make his way past her back to the door again. Once he got close enough, his hand came up, brushing against the side of her face lightly. She should have flinched away, but she didn’t, leaning into the touch a bit as she did. It’d been so long since someone touched her just to be there, and she wanted to soak it up and enjoy it before it was gone.

“Thanks for coming after me,” he said softly, holding her gaze as he did.

“You already said that.”

He shrugged. “Felt it was worth repeating.” He then leaned in, brushing a kiss to her temple gently. “Night, Bela.”

“Goodnight, Dean.”
