[Unlike the rapid and stilted way he talks during the day, the thoughts broadcast by N's PORTAL are measured and clear (if at times accompanied by seemingly random images of his Pokémon friends). This is a way he's more comfortable communicating.]
Hello, my name is N Harmonia. I have some questions. [Akito had given him some good ideas for what

And, um, I can't really talk about human love but I could tell you about our quadrants if you like?

I too know very little about human love. I was raised by other species. I would be pleased to hear about love as you know it. What are these quadrants?

Well the quadrants are what we have for romance. They're based on the two key emotions of pity and hate. Here, let me draw you a diagram.
[And she holds up something resembling this]
The red ones are pity and the black ones are hate. Okay so far?
[Because there's a lot more to come]

Pity and hate? [N considers this.] Why were they chosen as the two key emotions? Is it because they're the ones you feel most keenly?
[In spite of this question, he nods, because the chart is simple enough to read.] Yes, I understand that.

So, okay. We'll start with the red ones. You might see from the diagram the quadrants are also split between concupiscent and conciliatory - the ones for reproduction and the ones that...well, aren't.
So. The heart is the flushed quadrant, which is matespritship. That's the one most humans seem to recognise as being closest to their romance. Basically strong pity on both sides.
The diamond is moirallegiance, the pale quadrant, which I like to consider myself something of an expurrt on. Because trolls are violent, some especially so, they need a troll with a calmer personality to balance them. Moirails balance each other's weaknesses - fur example, I make sure my moirail Equius doesn't get too out of paw beclaws of his temper, since he's really strong and him losing his temper tends to be bad. And he purrtects me and makes sure I don't get caught up in anything dangerous.
[And she'll pause here before moving onto the black quadrants]

Moirallegiance. I like that very much. [It's already much easier for him to understand than romance.] Your moirail must be fortunate to have you. I believe I have a moirail, too. If people who are not trolls can have them. There is someone who balances my weaknesses as you describe.
So the axes are named the hate axis and the pity axis? But which is which? Do you assign a point within a quadrant for each relationship and then coordinate it? Or does each person within a moirallegiance have their own point? [If relationships could actually be defined by math, that would be interesting. And helpful.] Could one person within a moirallegiance be M 30, 22, yet another be M 5,3, with one being closer to pity and one closer to hate, though they both fall within the same quadrant?

Well, kind of? I've heard it's similar to siblings or to best friends, except humans can have more than one of those but we can only have one moirail.
[And now you've completely lost her with the maths]
Uh...I don't know? The black romances are the hate ones...but I don't really understand what you mean by the numbers? Either you're in a quadrant or you're not...I think.
[Congratulations, the kittytroll is flummoxed]

This person is someone I can only have one of, because of the unique way we are linked. No one else can fill the same role, and it is not that of a sibling or best friend. I have not been sure how to define it. We complement each other, and he stopped me from doing something harmful.
[Math would have been easier to understand, but if it's not mathematical, he can accept it.]
I must have misunderstood. Quadrant has another meaning for me.

Yes! That is exactly what a moirail does! You get it!
[And at that latter part]
Oh? Something to do with numbers?

"Quadrant" is a mathematical term where I am from. I enjoy mathematics, so I thought perhaps it was the same, and relationships could be charted and defined based on how close each person was to pity and hate. But that does not seem to be the case.
[A pause, as he thinks over everything she's said.] There are romances based on hate?

[But now back to what she does know]
Yes, kismesissitude and auspistice. Kismesissitude is the other mating quadrant and is about finding your fated enemy. Someone you compete with, someone you hate so much you don't want them to die. It's usually purrty messy to be honest.
Auspistice is the other non-mating quadrant and actually involves three trolls instead of just two. It's about someone acting as...I guess a mediator between trolls who could potentially be kismesis but it would be a bad idea for it to happen for some reason. That one...if she was here, I'd say you should speak to Kanaya about it.
