Overall thoughts
Still missing from this roundup because it was written in 2012 but will be up in 2013: my second go-round with X-Men Big Bang. I swear, there is something just so powerful about the idea of "Write at least 15k words about something, here are your other parameters/restrictions, and also there must be art or other media to go with" that is very, very evocative and also very, very inspiring. After having done at least three of these I am totally totally hooked on the concept.
[Have I mentioned that every Big Bang I have written has gotten LONGER?]
Also, fic exchanges. God, I love fic exchanges. The idea of receiving a fic is glorious and good - but the challenge of writing FOR someone and making it good for them, now that is a hell of an adrenaline rush. I think I've lost count of how many of those I got in on this year. And on so many different topics, too!
Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?
It FEELS like more, I think. It FEELS like I've certainly tried to do much more, but looking at my AO3 I posted about 80 fics in 2012 and - yeah, that really does seem like plenty. And that counts the story arc that I started in 2011 and finished in 2012 [
Serial Killer 'Verse, for those of you keeping score at home - I posted the last two stories in January], as well as the still-unpublished cyberpunk fusion XMBB.
Also: more bingos! I tried doing
Cotton Candy Bingo this year, rashly taking a card just off XMBB drafting. Imagine my surprise when I wound up doing 10 stories. Those were lovely prompts. I could not do Kink Bingo again because it started RIGHT in XMBB season, but I think I've written a little bit of porn to suffice? [Maybe? XD]
What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January?
The Avengers. Though mostly when I write about them there is an XMFC crossover involved. Um yeah. I still doubt that I have a Tony voice or a Steve voice, never mind Clint or Tasha or Bruce or Phil or Thor. But writing about those guys, even if just in the form of oblique mentions, was pretty damn fun.
Also: PROMETHEUS. Heek. I LOVELOVELOVE David 8, and he is startling easy to drop into relationships with all the characters. I wish I knew why!
What's your own favorite story of the year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you happiest?
Yes! Link spam time!
XMFC
NOW I can put
Serial Killer 'Verse in here because I completed it in January. I really enjoyed the hell out of writing that one and I still haven't quite gotten over my beta reader's astounded expressions every time I asked him about whether this Charles creeped him out or not. [Answer: yes. Every time.]
in a flash: my bookworm/photographer AU Charles/Erik AU which started the hell out of me because it was so very well-received. I still remember the thrill that I got out of writing their bed scene.
Two fics from the Valentine's Day collection:
Joined,
For Safekeeping: So much fun to write I swear.
I would be very, very remiss if I did not include
Meeting at the Chessboard on this list: a transcript of the first section of my Charles/Erik RP with the one and only
papercutperfect.
particle drift: a smitten!Erik story. Short, and sweet, and the person I wrote it for basically loved the hell out of it. I count that as a success in my book.
Just a Gentle Whisper: My own little contribution to the amazing
Daycare 'Verse.
Stream of Stars: my Charles/Erik Battlestar Galactica fusion 'verse, written for good friends and powerful enablers and people who love the Old Man and Madame Airlock as much as I do.
Tales from Evening Fall: Charles, Erik, kimono, tengu, and lovely lovely art inspiration.
Floating Bridge of Dreams: Because badassery comes in all shapes and sizes, including one shaped like Charles and one shaped like Erik.
falling awake: Charles on top is something that I'd dearly like to see more of - so I wrote it for myself!
Flower and Willow and Steel: When I received the art prompt of my DREAMS for XMRB I could just not stop writing. This one got some hate because it was a pretty weird AU - but this is also one of the fics that got a lot of love and I am still very grateful for that.
A Lily and a Gun Barrel: Because Q!Charles and 008!Erik, and guns, and Emma Frost owning a hell of a sniper rifle, and they all answer to M!Peggy Carter, and BARCELONA. I was not even remotely anonymous in the writing of this. I am proud of this, my Skyfall fusion :)
MCFASSY
he is one and i am other: Because David 8 and David 9. And they're both badass. And they're both amazing.
OTHER FANDOMS
"Trifolium repens": a story of Clint Barton and four-leaf clovers. Hell to write but it seems to have worked :)
Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?
Yes. Cotton Candy Bingo. A nonpowered dark fantasy 'verse called
In Accord. Flower and Willow and Steel. A Lily and a Gun Barrel. I might as well let my obsessions work for me.
Do you have any fanfic or profic goals for the New Year?
Get things done on XMBB. Write my McFassy Film AU fic. Collaborate with
afrocurl - we have several ideas all going, and there's one we're very excited to do in particular. Write my dark!D/s!Charlotte Xavier fic. Prep for the next rounds of XMBB and XMRB.
My best story of this year.
Flower and Willow and Steel, and A Lily and a Gun Barrel.
My most popular story of this year.
AO3 stats show: Flower and Willow and Steel, Tales from Evening Fall, Meeting at the Chessboard.
Story of mine most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion.
sweet bravery: a story of kid!Charles & Erik and meeting as children.
Most fun story to write.
Tales from Evening Fall, in a flash :)
Story with the single sexiest moment.
The recent stories win this one: falling awake,
visionary fallen, and
tie me up tie me down [please please me].
Most "Holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story.
Again, Serial Killer 'Verse! And there are bits in In Accord that were startling and difficult and very bloody.
Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters.
In Accord, Flower and Willow and Steel, Stream of Stars.
Hardest story to write.
Serial Killer 'Verse, In Accord, and to a certain extent Tales from Evening Fall.
Biggest surprise.
So much wank about AUs. I mean, what for? Whatever for, when XMFC itself is an AU?
Most unintentionally telling story.
The stories I wrote in the month leading up to my wedding in July XD - including one story from Tales from Evening Fall, and
My dreams are bursting at the seams.
In conclusion.
This year has been about Charles and Erik and James and Michael and Charlotte and Erika and Jamie and - whew. :) I think it'd be safe to assume I'm still going to be in XMFC/McFassy fandom for the time being, what with new James and Michael films coming up and Ian and Patrick jumping on for the ride all the way to 2014. Bring it on! I've got my tent right here!
